Women in German Universities.
’ The number of women in attendance at the German Universities timing this present winter semester has passed the first thousand.*" says a Gottingen newspaper. ”In all. 1029 have been admitted. against 618 in the last summer semester and 664 in the previous winter. ’’Twelve women have been allowed to matriculate—ten in Freiburg and two in Heidelberg. There are now studying at Merlin University 439 women, at Bonn I’Mi. Leipsic 79. Halle 76. Breslau
67. Freiburg 38. Gottingen 37. Munuhen 31. Wurzburg 29. Konigsberg 24. Giessen and Heidelbi rg each 23. Kiel 19. Strassburg 16. Greifswald 13. Marburg 6. Tubingen 4. Rostock 3. and Erlangen 2. l*he ma jority of the women now studying at the German Universities are German. and of these many are women teachers who are preparing for examinations which will allow them to teach in the girls" gymnasiums and in the higher schools for girls. The remainder of the women students are Americans. Russians and English for the greater part. The young women who have been allowed to matriculate at Freiburg and
Heidelberg are chiefly those that have been prepared at the ( arlsruhe Girls’ Gymnasium. They can apply to take The examination for the degree of doctor of philosophy without special permission from the Cultus Minister of Baden. The other women studying at German Universities are allowed to attend certain lectures ami do laboratory work, and when they show marked ability to apply for permission from the Cultus Minister to take the examination for the degree of doctor of philosophy. Already twenty or more women have been granted this degree by German Universities, and of these American women have formed the larger number, then German and then English.
