His Excellency the Governor having received a command to attend on the Duke of Cornwall in Sydney on the 27th inst., leaves by the Mokoia on Saturday.

General regret was felt in Auckland on the announcement of the death of Mr. Kinsella, late of “Hansard,” and sometime chief of the literary staff of the “New Zealand Herald.” The late gentleman was a literary scholar and Shakespearian student of' unusual brilliance, and had many friends and admirers in both Auckland and Wellington. He was also an admirable art critic, and his articles on this subject were unexcelled. Mr. D. H. Ross, of Sargood. Son & Ewen, left for ’Frisco by the Sonoma. Mr. Brodie, of the Auckland Post Office staff, was ordered off on the Sonoma as mail agent on Monday last. He was only given an hour’s notice. Mr. Alfred Kidd, of Auckland, returns from his three weeks’ trip down South this (Wednesday) morning. Mr. and Mrs. J. Holmes, of Christchurch, were passengers for London by the ’Frisco mail boat. Ex-Judge Martin returned to New Zealand by the Zealandia on Monday.

Sir James Prendergast was one of the London passengers by the outward bound mail boat Sonoma. Mrs. and Miss Jack, of Hokitika, have been staying in Rotorua. Miss W. Leys, of Auckland, who has been travelling with her father during his tour through the Australian Colonies as one of the Federal Commis-

sioners, returned by the Waikare last week.

Mr and Miss Cotter, who have been visiting Sydney, returned by the Zealandia on Sunday. Amongst the passengers by the Zealandia from Sydney were Mrs and Miss Waller. Mr W. Lodder, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to Sydney, is at present in Auckland, and expects to leave by the Mararoa for the South. Mr Stuart, S.M., of Wellington, has been visiting his son, Mr R. Stuart, of New Plymouth, but has now returned. Sir W. Blunden, Bart., and Lady Blunden, with their family, are visiting Mrs Shuttleworth (Lady Blunden’s mother), of New Plymouth, previous to their departure to Ireland to take possession of the ancestral estates. Masters Fred and Vincent Innes, of Nelson College, are spending their term holidays with their mother in Auckland. Mrs Drake, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs Roy, of New Plymouth, has returned to her home in Otaki. The Rev. Mr Bradbury has resigned his position of curate in charge of the Omata Church, New Plymouth, and a new curate has been appointed—the Rev. Charles Harrisen, from Coromandel. Mr Harold Thomson, clerk at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court, is leaving in order to set up a practice as a solicitor at Inglewood. Mrs Lloyd has been visiting her daughter, Mrs Southey Baker, of New Plymouth, but has now returned to Palmerston.

Mrs Butler, Wellington, returned home this week from Wanganui, where she has been paying a short visit to Mrs Abbot, at “Balgownie.”

On the arrival at Wellington from Sydney in the Warrimoo on Thursday last. Captain Richardson was welcomed by a deputation of marine officers and representatives of the Institute of Marine Engineers, who presented him with a very handsome oak cabinet and inkstand combined, on behalf of the officers of the s.s. Waikare (which boat he formerly commanded). Mr A. R. Hislop made the presentation, which was suitably inscribed, and Captain Richardson feelingly thanked the donors for their very handsome gift, and also for the kindly feeling towards himself which prompted it. Mr and Mrs David Nathan, Wellington, spent a few days in Palmerston last week, and were present at the Manawatu races.

Mr and Mrs F. Webster, who have been visiting Te Arolia on account of the former’s health, have now returned to New Plymouth, both looking much better for the change. Mrs Evans, of Wellington, on her way from Auckland paid Mrs Hempton a short visit in New Plymouth, but has now returned. Mrs T. Moorhouse is leaving for England by the Tongariro. Mr, Mrs and Miss Ronalds, Christchurch, contemplate a trip to England, and I hear their niece. Miss B. Nancarrow, will accompany them. Mrs Westniaeott is visit ing amono her old friends in Christchurch. Mrs and Miss Deans, Riccarton, went up to Hanmer Springs. Mr and Mrs Balfour, England, who have been the guests of Mr Robert Turnbull in Wellington, have left Wellington for the South. Mr and Mrs Stevens, Nelson, passed through Wellington last week on their way to Dunedin, where they are spending a short time at Onslow House before leaving for England. Mr and Mrs Chaytor, of "Marshlands,” Blenheim, left for Sydney, on Friday last, where they join the P. and O. liner Rome for England, and will be absent from New Zealand for about six months. Mrs. Empson has jast returned to Rotorua after a visit to Tauranga. She is looking much better for the change. The Misses Kenny, of “The Rocks,” Queen Charlotte Sound, are visiting Mrs. Kenny, of Rotorua. We would draw attention to the photographic exhibition to be held in Wellington in August under the auspices of the Camera Club, and to the competitions in connection with the same. Reference to the advertisement in another column, will show the very substantial inducements which are being offered in the shape of prizes for camera work of different kinds.

Mr and Mrs Arthur Pearee. Wellington, who went for a cycling trip to the Otira Gorge, returned home last week. Lady Ranfurly, accompanied by the Ladies Constance and Eileen Knox and Captain Alexander, arrived from Melbourne to-day in the Warrinioo. During her visit to England the Countess obtained the services of another aide de-eamp for His Excellency the Governor —the Hon. Arthur O’Neill. Mr O’Neill is the eldest son of Lord O’Neill, of famous Irish descent, and has lately returned from South Africa, where he has been fighting with our enemy.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kerr, of Wellington. with their little son, are on a visit to Auckland, and are staying at “Glenalvon.” Mrs A. L. Wilson, of Wellington, is on a visit to her sister, Mrs Willoughby Kenny, at her new residence, Grange Road, Mt. Eden. Mrs W. Atkinson, of Nelson, has gone for a trip to Westport. Miss Trix Atkinson, of Nelson, is spending a short holiday in Christchurch. Miss Gribben, of Nelson, is spending her holidays with her people at Hokitika. Miss F. Sealy, of Wanganui, is spending the holidays with her people in Nelson. Mrs Mackie spent a few days in Wellington, and returned to Nelson last Monday by the Mapourika and experienced an alarmingly heavy sea in the Straits. Mr Gow, the Commissioner from the Department of Agriculture and Commerce, was in Nelson last week. Archbishop Redwood and Father Stanilaus Mahoney, are at present conducting a jubilee mission at St. Mary’s Mission Roman Catholic Church. Nelson.

Mrs and Miss Salanders, of Nelson, have gone for a trip to Wanganui. Mrs C-ock, of Nelson, has taken her children to Christchurch for the holidays. Miss Bertha State was in Blenheim last Monday on her way home to Bobin Hood Bay. She had been spending a few days with Mrs Monro at “Bank House.” Mrs Lambie has been paying a round of visits in Blenheim and its vicinity, first with Mrs Chaytor at “Marshlands,” then with Mrs Ensor at Spring Creek, and later with Mrs Orr in Blenheim. She returned to “Birch Hill” on Saturday, her son having returned from College, and brought several College friends to spend the vacation. Miss Bertha White, who came from the North Island to visit Airs Stace, at Robin Hood Bay, has been spending a week or two with Mrs Monro at “Bank House,” and is now the guest of Mrs Redman at “Cowley,” Blenheim. Miss Staveley, of Wellington, has come to visit her sister, Mrs W. Baillie. Mrs Mcßae, who has been staying with Mrs J. Mowat, in Blenheim, and with Mrs Mowat at “Altimarloch,” In the Awatere, returned to Wellington last Monday.

Mr Griffiths lias returned to Blenheim from his trip to Christchurch and Wellington. Mrs Watts, of “Landsdo. ne,” Wairau Valley, arrived in Blenheim from a few weeks’ visit to Nelson on Friday. Miss Cotterell, who has been spending a few weeks with her cousin. Miss Seymour, in Picton, returned to Blenheim on Saturday night. Miss Emily Philpotts, of Picton, spent a few days in Blenheim last week, where she stayed with Mrs White. Miss Cottier, who has been spending a very pleasant holiday at Rotorua, has returned to New Plymouth, looking much better for the trip. Miss Freeth, who has been visiting her many friends and relations in Masterton aud Wellington, has returned to her home iu New Plymouth. Miss Twig, of Napier, is at present the guest of Mrs Troutbeek, Wanganui. Mr E. J. Alien, manager of the Bank of New Zealand. New Plymouth, has received notice of transfer to ?,elson. and Mr Buckleton. of Auckland, will take his place.
