JUNGLE JINKS.

Jumbo Junior’s First Smoke.

1. Smoking is one of the things strictly forbidden at the Jungle School. Any boy caught smoking is liable to be sent to bed early without any supper, and get a birching into the bargain. Jumbo Junior, Young Rhino, and Hippo knew this, but they longed to try a quiet whiff unobserved. So one day they went to a tobacco-shop and bought some pipes and cigars, and then trotted off to a quiet spot under some trees, where they thought nobody could see them. But it chanced that their big brothers passed that way just as they were in the midst of the fun.

2. “Oh, the young demons!” exclaimed Rhino the Elder, “did you ever see anything like it? Every one of them with dirty clay pipes in their mouths!” “Disgusting!” cried Jumbo. “The idea of kids their age smoking pipes! We must put a stop to this at once!” Ilut when the young culprits caught sight of their elders they ran off as fast as their legs would carry them. Jumbo and Rhino Senior at once gave chase. “Come back!” cried Jumbo. “If you don’t give up those pipes at once I’ll report you to Doctor Lion.” “Not much!” the youngsters shouted back. “You want to smoke them yourselves. We know all about you!”

3. Over several fields they ran, and at last arrived at a farmyard, panting and nearly exhausted. “Let's climb on to the roof of the shed!” cried Rhino Junior. And up they all scrambled, just as their pursuers entered the yard. “Put out those pipes at once!” cried Jumbo from below. “Sha'n’t!” returned the others rudely. “We'll see about that!” cried big Rhino, as he fastened a water-pipe to a tap. Presently the water was turned on, and a cry of dismay went up from those on the roof. One after the other they slid down and were taken prisoners. After giving them a box on the ears all round, Jumbo smashed their pipes. Smoking has gone out of fashion now in the Jungle School.
