Dear Bee, October- 10. The hill climbing competition for cyclists has now become an annual affair, and came off on Thursday in spite of the clouds of dust raised by a. good old-fashioned nor’-wester, which made things very uncomfortable during the udging of decorated bicycles ami riders in fancy costume.

Among the ladies for decorated bicycle Miss Goodfellow came first. Miss Alenas second and Miss Parsons third. About one hundred and fifty bicyclists then wended their way to the foot of the Port Hills, the scene of the sports, affording much amusement to the numerous spectators en route. The various events were witnessed by a large crowd on the hills, the climbing being won by Mr C. Jones in a veryclose race from Mr A. Calder, last year’s winner. At the conclusion Messrs T. E. Taylor and Cole entertained the committee and officials to tea at the residence of the latter, and in the evening a smoke concert was held in the dub’s rooms, Gloueesterstreet, and the prizes presented. Mr F. T. Pannell (captain) presided, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. On Saturday there were so many attractions it was difficult, to choose which to attend, and the weather was perfect, but as usual anything to do with the military takes first place. The C.Y.C. have been in camp at Addington during the past week, and have had' frequent manoeuvres in Hagley PaTk. and on Saturday finished ■ with sports. Among the spectators were Mrs G. E. Bond, and many others. At Lancaster and Hagley Parks the opening of the cricket season totok place, and a scratch match was played at both. —Mrs W. D. and the Misses Meares dispensed tea at the former, while Miss Harman and assistants were responsible at the latter., The bowling season was also opener! for both Christchurch and C-auter-bitry f lubs, the greens being in excellent order. The sports ar Lincolit,College, postponed front the previous Saturday, ■came off’ on the 6th, and;a number of .visitors from Christchurch found their .wayrout there by.drag.of bicycle, the .visitors all being entertained at afternoon tea. A large marquee was, erected on the lawn, and the students pvere most , attentive in looking after every body. - .The grass courts at Lancaster Park Tennis and Croquet Club were also openeel on Saturday, ami a number of visitors were present. The eight courts were kept tilled throughout the afternoon and tea was dispensed at intervals by the ladies of the ehib. The well-worn opera “H.M.S Pinafore" was Staged again last week by the Christchurch Amateur Operatic Society for three nights, and very good Umises secured. The opera went very byightiy, the dancing of a hornpipe byfour little girls being a special feature. This was doubly and trebly ■encaged nightly. The setting was one of the prettiest stage scenes of “Pinafore" 1 have seen. The characters were tilled hv tax the "bjj the

gentlemen, which is rather unusaal There was a crowded house on Friday night, many of the volunteers being present; also Colonel and Mrs Gordon. The latter looked extremely well in cream brocade; Mr and Mrs G. G. Stead, the latter in a handsome black satin and steel; Mr W. and Miss Stead, Mr and Mrs A. Rollestou, Mr and Mrs Buckley, Mrs J. Studholme, Mrs and Misses Louisson, Mrs Marks, Mr and Mrs Hunter Macandrew. Miss Macao drew, Mr and Miss Allan, Mr W., Mrs and Misses Reece, Mrs Turnbull, and many others. A bazaar was held in the Art Gallery in aid of the German Church oae day last week, atid it proved quite a pretty scene, with the floral decorations. the gay stalls, and the national costumes of the stall-holders, Mrs Mickle wearing a very handsome costume. The Mayor opened the bazaar. Others present were Mrs lieei-e. Mr and Mrs Kohn, Mr and Mrs Barkas, Mr. Mrs and Misses Kipfienberger, Dr. Mickle, Rev. Meyer, Mrs and Miss Cowlishaw, Air and Mrs Richards, Misses Murray-Aynsley. Tabart, Turner, Overton, Schwartz, Mrs and Miss Cook, ete. We are looking forward with great pleasure to a dramatic performance given under the auspices of the Natives’ Association, to take place on Thursday and Friday this week. Among the performers are Mr and Mrs H. E. Marsh. Mr and Mrs F. W. Thompson, Messrs Graham, McNeish, Wells, and Edgar, Messrs Winter Hall Dundas Walker, R. Thompson. F. Graham, Wood-Jones, Barnard and Parkinson. These names include some of our best amateurs, and an excellent performance is anticipated. The Exhibition choir is making good progress with the ode specially composed for the opening day. They have bertt joined now by the orchestra with very pleasing results. Both composers (Mr O. J. T. Alpers and Mr Maughan Barnett) were present at one of the rehearsals. DOLLY YALE.
