AVv seemed to have shock after shock last week, while feeling deeply the atrocities being enacted in Ch’na, and the return of a number of our invalided soldiers from South Afr’ca, making us realise much more fore b y the sufferings they hid undergone, came the assassination of the King of Italy, who seems to have been a beloved monarch without an en/mv. and yet such a tragedy was committed and this was followed by the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, plunging our beloved Queen and his aged mother into the deepest grief. , The Duke of Edinburgh bears a special interest for a great many New Zealanders, his trip in H.M.s. Galatea lyeitig well remembered, and the festivities in connection with his visit. The C..Y.C. gave A DINNER to Captain Lindsay and h ; s son. Lieutenant Lindsay, both of Timaru, and who are among the returned invalids. They spent a few days in Christchurch on their wav home, and though no official reception took place, they met. many old comrades at the dinner, which took place at Coker's Hotel. At the A'.M.C.A rooms on Friday evening the first “At Home" of F.ie season of the Christchurch Liederkranzehen took place, under the. new conductor. Air. A. W. J. Bunz. The siuging was very bright, and the evening as a whole was a marked improvement. Miss Moir sang “The Haymakers" charmingly. Miss Katie A oung also played a piano solo delightfully, and was an able accompanist to the singers, as well as Miss Freda Alarsden with her violin. At the close of the concert refreshments- were handed round. Among those present were Mrs .Julius. Afrs. Cecil Wilson, were Mrs. Julius. Afrs. Cecil AA’ilson, and Airs. J. Little, AHss Hicks, Mr. and Mrs. J. Fairhurst, Mr. and Afrs. N. Macbeth, Afrs. and AHss Graham, Dr. and Mrs. Af. -A-nderson, Mr. and AfUses March, Mrs. Burns. Afrs. AV. AVilson, Misses Mcares, Mrs. Afarsden, Miss Hargreaves, Afrs. A’oung, Mr. Afrs. and Miss Hobbs. Mrs. C. Cook, Airs. Stringer, etc.
