Dear Bee, July 30 - The Nelson Amateur Opera and Dramatic Society gave two most successful performances of “The GUV’NOR" in the Theatre Royal last Wednesday and Thursday evenings. There was a crowded audience each evening, and the constant laughter and hearty applause testified to the fact that all were well pleased with the entertainment. The piece went with great spirit from beginning to end, the fun being kept up incessantly, which reflects great credit upon the individual performers, and also the stage manager (Mr W. W. Squires). The following was the cast of characters: —Mr Butterscotch (the Guv’nor), Mr A. P. Barnes; Freddy Butterscotch (his son), Mr F. W. Shallcrass; Theo. Macclesfield, Mr R. Hamilton; Jellicoe, Mr S. D. Levien; Ullage, Mr C. Levien; Cabman and Gunnel, Mr W. Smith; Cantie, Mr A. Giblin; Vellum, Mr Lindo Levien; The McToddy, Mr D. Watt; Gregory, Mr J. H. Finney; Old Macclesfield, Mr E. Mackay; Mrs Macclesfield, Mrs A. P. Burnes; Carrie, Miss E. Pratt; Mrs Butterscotch, Miss N. Sealy; Kate, Miss N. Reeves; Barbara, Mrs W. R. Walker. The dresses worn on the stage were very good. In the first act Miss Sealy wore a smart flowered muslin trimmed with black ribbon velvet and lace, and in the third act a handsome black skirt, pink silk blouse with a deep fichu of lace and chiffon; Miss Reeves first wore a becoming pink muslin frock with a chic hat to match, and afterwards she looked equally well in blue trimmed with white lace; Mrs A. P- Burnes’ get-up as an elderly lady was good, especially in the last act; Miss Pratt wore a plain blue frock at first, and later on a pretty white muslin, large white hat with red and pink roses; Mr Mackay’s get-up as Old Macclesfield was splendid, and Mr Watt, as the Scotchman, was also good. On Friday evening Mrs Renwick gave a PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE PARTY at her residence, “Newstead," for her niece, Mrs Young, of Marlborough, who is spending some weeks in Nelson. The first prizes were won by Mrs Booth and Mr Wither, and Misses Quick and Mr Dixon won the booby prizes. Mrs Renwick wore a gown of violet satin veiled with black lace, frill vest of heliotrope silk, finished with frills of white chiffon; Mrs 'Young looked well in a gown of mauve cashmere trimmed with bands of velvet of a deeper shade and rich lacfe; Mrs Robertson, black, white cap; Miss Robertson, pink silk blouse trimmed with cross bands of black ribbon velvet, black skirt, pink chiffon sash. Amongst the guests were Mrs Adams, black satin relieved with cerise velvet; Mrs A. P. Burnes, black evening gown, the decolletage finished with, sapphire blue velvet applique and pearls; Mrs Andrew, ivory broche satin; Mrs Booth, steel grey satin finished with rich lace; Miss Curtis, black; Mrs de Castro, green velvet with bodice of white satin; Miss Duff, stylish black gown;her sister wore light silk blouse, black skirt; Mrs Fulton (Collingwood), blaek evening dress with lace sleeves; Mrs A. Glasgow, black satin; Miss Huddleston, black relieved with scarlet flowers; Miss Jones, pink silk; Mrs Kingdon, black silk skirt, lace bedice over red; Miss Levien looked well in pink; Miss E. Mackay, pink; Miss Quick (Wellington), black skirt, pale blue bodice; Mrs Roberts, forget-me-not silk; Miss Roberts, black; Miss Richmond, heliotrope pink silk trimmed with velvet of darker shade: Miss Rayner, soft white silk; Mrs Jack Sharp, black silk, the bodice relieved with cerise velvet: Miss Sealy, soft white silk trimmed with black bebe ribbon velvet; Miss Talbot, light flowered silk blouse, black skirt: Messrs A. Adams, Burnes, Booth, de Castro, Duncan. Glasgow-, Kingdon, Hursthouse, Levien, Mackay. Muir. Moore (2). Coney, Hamilton, Dixon. D.
