JUNGLE JINKS.
1. Rhino and Jumbo had each been given one of Doctor Lion's children to mind. “ Now. take great care of the cubs: and mind you don’t get into any mischief!” were Mrs Lion's parting words as they left the school. And fora time they behaved themselves as young gentlemen should, but the arrival of young Hare-upon the scene put an end to all their good resolutions. “ Here, you chaps, why don’t you have some sport, instead of hanging about like a couple of nursemaids? I'll lend you some string to play 'horses’ if you like.” The idea caught on at once, and soon the horses were ready for work. “ What do you say to a race across the steppingstones in the river and back again’” said Hare.
2. “Splendid idea,” exclaimed Jumbo: " but what is the prize going to l»e ?" "The winner gets four ounces of lovely acid drops.” replied Hare. The boys didn’t wait to hear more, but whipped up their horses; and, at a given signal from Hare, they dashed off towards the river. Rhino was the first to reach the river bank, “(lee up! my fine horse.” he said, “we shall be there and back before old Jumbo has started.” “ Don’t you be so sure of that. Mr. Boaster! eried Jumbo, who was close behind and heard what Rhino said. “We mean to taste those acid-drops, or die in the attempt.” .
3. But, alas! neither of the gallant drivers managed to win that race. When they were half-way across the river Rhino's horse slipped and fell into the water, and in trying to save him Rhino also overbalanced and went in plop! Jumbo and his horse quickly followed: and soon all four instead of munching acid-drops, were swallowing mouthfuls of nasty river water. Luckily, both tne big boys were good swimmers, and after a while they all reached dry land in safety. “Oh.” said Young. Hare, when he met them again. “I thought you were not coming back, so I ate those acid-drops myself! But what did Dr. Lion say when they reached home all wet’ That is what we should like to know.
