PAINTING COMPETITION.

'l'he painting competition which has just closed was much Ind ter than the first one I gave you, but even now* I am not satisfied. I dare say this seems, rather nasty on my part, for really a very large* number of children tried, and much of the work was good, but then, you see, T am one of those people who want the very best. I am sure ii is good for you to learn what is beautiful in colour, and to like beautiful things, and you can learn much by colouring pictures. Perhaps, as Cousin Anna says, in a letter printed amongst my post-bag (is it not getting a big one nowadays?) perhaps our “Graphic” pictures are bad to colour. I am going to think this out, and try and devise a competition that will please all of you who like painting. 'l'he judges award the FIRST PRIZE < OI'SIN BERYL GRAHAM, AI’CK LA ND. They did not think I need give a second prize, but COCHIN DORA KNAPP, TOKOKINO, sent in a picture which so nearly won the prize that I am sending her one too. Both Cousin Beryl and Cousin Dora are to Im* very warmly commended. Their paintings show great taste and a good eye for artistic effect. Several other cousins are worthy of special mention, but my p;ige is get ting so full with letters from new cousins that I can only this week men t ion XII.EEN LINGARD, W ELLI NG TON. whose picture was certainly next best to the prize-winners, and which showed very great ability and promise.
