Dear Bee, February 10. The attention of everylvody this week has been taken up with the demonstrations in connection with the sending off of the third contingent, the rough-riders of Hawke’s Hay, to South Africa. Some appropriate speeches were made, and Captain Berry, on behalf of the Napier Guards, was presented with a case of silver mounted pipes by Lieutenant Forsythe. Private Hawthorne of the Napier Rifles was the recipient of the belt and gold medal as champion shot of the Company for this year. Major Chicken, in making* the presentation, hoped that the same Company would assemble there to welcome Private Hawthorne back, and that in addition he would Kvear then the 'South (African war medal and Victoria Cross. At the Masonic Hotel on the same evening, members of the Wanganui C-ojlegiate Sclbooi £ind Napier High School Old Boys’ Association met to say farewell to Troopers Collinge, Richardson, Heslop, Saxby, M’Lean. Anderson and Baker. The chair was taken by Lieutenant Colonel Wood, supported by 'Messrs Cornford and Oat-o. Songs and recitations were given by different members of the tVmpauy. and it he accompaniments were played by Messrs O. Sainsbury and Hobson. On Sunday afternoon a service was held at the Camp ou the Recreation Ground by the Dean of Waiapu. Chaplain of the Forces. The ground was crowded, as was the enclosure outside the Masonic Hotel on the following day, when a final send off was given to the contingent. From early morning the town was full of visitors from all parts of Hawke s Bay, and never has there been such an enthusiastic crowd in Napier as that which welcomed the contingent on their arrival at the Rotunda front the Camp, escorted by ail the Hawke’s Bay volunteers- After speeches from the Rotunda by the Dean and His Worship the Mayor, the procession marched to the Breakwater, where the contingent emlrarked on the Flora, for 'Lyttelton. Amongst those present on the balcony of the Masonic Hotel and in the enclosure were Lady Ranfurly, in a crimson eoat and skirt braided with white, ami a black hat; Lady Whitmore, in black and white; Mrs G. P. Donnelly, in a handsome dark blue costume, and a black toque; Mrs Frank Perry, in a bright blue glace silk blouse, a dark skirt, and a large black hat; Mrs Hovell -wore h sage green eostuine and a bhick bonnet; Mrs Williams was in black silk; MrsOrmond also -wore black; MrsCornford had a dress of transparent black material over crimson; Mrs McLean was in black; Mrs Ronald looked well in grey and white; Mrs Coleman was also in grey and white, and a black and silver bonnet: Miss Florence Watt wore blue; Miss Sirnoox had a fawn coat and skirt, and a sailor hat; Mrs Turnbull wore black relieved with pale green; Mrs Wood had a pretty light costume; Miss Wood was in ’white pique: Mrs Davidson looked well in black over pale blue; .Mrs Carlile wore grey and white check; Mrs 'DeLisle’s pretty lavender costume was relieved with white; Mrs Bowen had a navy blue silk dress with white spots, and a black toque; Mrs Jarvis wore . black and green; Miss M’Lean was in cream: Miss Kennedy, light Mouse, dark skirt: Mrs Goldsmith, dark green; Mrs Harrington was in black; Miss Harrington wore white pfque; Miss Mildred Harrington, white and blue; Mrs Moore, fawn.
