Mrs A. Beauchamp, Pelorus Sound, is visiting Mrs Duncan in Picton for a week or two. The Premier returned to Wellington on Tuesday last from his three weeks’ electioneering tour in the South. Mrs Maxwell, from Scotland, has been visiting Miss Walker, of-New Plymouth, but has now returned by the Tokomaru, her husband being the captain of it. Miss M. Speed, Pieton. is spending a week or two with her sister, Mrs H. Howard, in Blenheim. Mr Aiken, the Mayor-elect of Wellington, entertained his friends and supporters at a social in the “Troeadero” on Monday evening last, and, after speeches had been made by the various Chairmen of Committees and others, Mr Aiken, who presided, thanked all the committeemen and workers for the hearty manner in which they had worked to secure his election. Later on in the evening songs and recitations were contributed by the Misses Wilson and Whiteford, and Messrs Wilson and Brown, and a very pleasant evening was spent by all present. Mrs Allen, Picton. was in Blenheim last week visiting friends, and acting (with Mi-s J. B. Stoney) as a judge of bouquets, floral devices, etc., at the Horticultural Show. Mr G. S. Mayer, manager of Messrs Boss and Glendinning’s Wellington branch of the woollen department, was presented with a wedding gift, on the eve of his marriage, by his fellowemployees. and the health of himself and his future bride was afterwards heartily drunk by all present before

Miss Nina Greensill, who is studying for her B.A. at the Canterbury College, has returned home to Picton for the long vacation. On Monday last Sapper Head, the victim of the gun-cotton explosion at Mahanga Bay on 7th August last, received his discharge from the Wellington Hospital, where he has been ever since. After spending a short holiday in Wellington Sapper Head proceeds to Westport on a holiday visit to his mother, who has received many hearty congratulations upon her son’s wonderful recovery. Among the Picton visitors to the Blenheim Elower Show were Mrs Allen, Mrs Williams. Misses Speed, Card, Hallett, Peek, Webster, J ackson, Robertshaw, etc. Captain Falconer, Wellington, is at present in Christchurch attending the annual encampment of the Canterbury Engineers at New Brighton, and on Boxing Day goes on to Port Chalmers Regatta in order to superintend a gun-' cotton explosion in the harbour there, and will also superintend a similar display in Lyttelton Harbour on New Year’s Day. Mrs E. T. Williams. Picton. has applied for a patent for an invention for scientific dress-cutting. Owing to the exceedingly boisterous weather which prevailed on Saturday last in Wellington the Thorndon Swimming Club’s sports, which were to have taken place on that day. had to be postponed until the 16th December. Mr A. B. Seymour has been elected unopposed as Mayor of Picton. It is a good many years since Mr Seymour served the town in that capacity, though he has been a borough councillor for a great many years. Mr and Mrs Cranstone Wigley (Christchurch) are the guests of Mrs Rhodes, at “The Grange,*’ Wellington, for the Christmas holidays. Mr F. W. Andrews, of Staples and Co., Wellington, was in Picton last week, on his way to Blenheim, where he acted as judge of barley exhibits at the Agricultural Show, All Mr Andrews’ old friends gathered round to welcome him back. The crowd in Wellington on election night was an unusually orderly one, and the usual predominance of horseplay and rotten egg throwing was pleasantly absent, and* very, few arrests' for drunkenness were made during the evening, the crowd contenting' themselves with hooting or cheering the various successful candidates as the results of the polls were declared. Miss Seymour, Picton, is now at “Meadowbank,’’ Wairau, keeping house for her brothers, one of whom is managing- the station. Miss Blackett (Wellington) is exhibiting a charming collection of watercolour sketches of Fijian scenery at the Gallery of Messrs MacGregor Wright in that city, the result of several months’ sketching in Fiji. The sketches arc exceedingly clever, and an oil painting of a Fijian boy is also in the collection, and is also a thoroughly typical likeness of the “handsome’* Fijian race. Mrs Welford, who has been visiting her sister-in-law, Mrs T. Mowat, North Island, has returned to spend Christmas with her people. Dr. and Mrs Scott, in Picton. Miss Isabel Coleridge (Wellington) returned from her visit to Dunedin and Christchurch last week. Mr and Mrs Wynn-Williams, Pelorus Sound, who have been in Christchurch for a month, returned on Saturday, and went through to Blenheim. They intend to go home via Havelock this time. H.M.s. Ringdove is paying- Wellington a visit, and remains in Wellington with the Mildura until the middle of December. Miss Allen has returned to Picton from Tyntesfield, Miss Ethel Seymour having recovered sufficiently to be left. Mrs Fitz - Herbert (Wellington) leaves on a visit to England by the Gothic next week. Mr and Mrs Masefield have returned to “Manaroa,” Pelorus Sound, after a week’s visit to Picton. Mrs A. Beauchamp. Pelorus Sound, is in Picton staying with Mrs Philpotts. Mr and Mrs J. H. Howard. Springlands, Blenheim, were in Picton this week from Saturday till Monday. Miss Stace returned to Blenheim from a three months' visit to the North Island, which she spent in different places. Some young ladies who saw him when they were touring New Zealand, have written to a friend in Picton for a. photo of the queer Creature. Their friends thought they vvere telling some real “travellers’ tales” when they mentioned "Pelorus Jack.” Mr and Mrs Lowry, of Hawke’s Bay, are staying with Mrs Richmond, “The Cliffs,” Nelson. Miss Blackett, of Wellington, is staying with Mrs Marsden, "Isel,” Stoke. Mrs Bunny has returned to Nelson, after staying several weeks with Mrs Riddiford, “The Hutt,” Wellington. Miss Day. of England, has returned to Nelson from Wanganui, and is the guest of Mrs Laggatt. According to her usual custom Mrs Watts has come to spend Christmas at “Landsdowne,” with Mr and Mrs George -Watts. She arrived in Blenheim on Saturday tßtening. with Mrs G. Watts, who-had gone as far as Picton to megt her. , Miss Carte, of Wellington, is on a visit to Mrs Olivecroner, in Blenheim. Mrs J. Welford (Pieton) lying with Mrs A. Simpson, Maxwell Road, Blenheim. Mr J. Black, of Blenheim, spent a few days in Wellington last week. Mrs Malcolm (Blenheim) is spending fl week with Mr and Mrs Adams, at “Langlej' Dale.” The military concert in Blenheim last Friday was very successful, and reflected great credit on Miss Emily Rose, who, with Mr Sturrock, had arranged it. Dr. De Lisle of Napier, paid a short visit to Gisborne last week. The Napier people are sorry to hear that he is probably leaving there for Gisborne early in the year.
