Croquet is wonderfully revived, and last week a tournament was played at Lancaster Park between Christchurch and a team from Wellington, resulting in a win for the visitors, which has made our local players very enthusiastic, and the crack of the croquet ball may be heard at all hours, nnd even on the “ day of days,” when it would be best silent. A sHiower of rain is not sufficient to damp the ardour of the devotees, so the next tournament we may have a different story to tell. Among the Wellington players were Mr C., Mrs, and Miss Johnston, Mrs and Miss Riddiford, Miss Williams, Miss Fitzherbert, Messrs Pearce, Hadfield. and the Hon. E. Butler, and among the Christchurch players were Mr and Mrs Pitman. Mr and Mrs Wardrop, Mrs Ogle, Miss Cowlisfhaw. Mr Allen and others. A number of onlookers were present. Julius, Murray-Aynsley, Wilson, Fitzherbert, Malet, Cotterill. Palmer, Reeves, Williams, Campbell, Wynn-Williams, and several more.

We are looking forward to another entertainment on Friday evening by t'hat clever little company called the “ Bright Hours Children,” and this time it is a benefit for the widow and children of the late Mr Smith, who are in very distressed circumstances. There is not much fear of our becoming selfish in Christc'hurch, for there is (unfortunately for them) always some case which appeals to our deepest sympathy. On Saturday morning we were very shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mr C. H. Lascelles, which took place fihe day before at the Bank of New South Wales, the residence of Mrs Lascelles' parents. Mr and Mrs Lascelles had come to town for the race week, and while at the Club one day, Mr Lascelles and another gentleman were indulging in what is commonly called horse-play, in which rough game Mr Lascelles 'had the misfortune to get his leg broken. It was im-

mediately attended to. and the doctors thought him progressing most favourably, when lute in the second week he complained of severe |>ain in the region of his heart and died in half an hour, the cause being a small clot of blood. The greatest sympathy is felt for his young wife, who is left with two little children. Mr Lascelles had a wide circle of friends in Christchurch who were glad to welcome him back to New Zealand when he returned from the Argentine, where he am! Mr Glen were partners for a little time. Since then he with his family haie been residing at Lake Heron station. Mrs Lascelles is a sister of Mrs \V. P. Reeves, and also hns ninny friends to mourn with her the loss of her liusband. DOLLY VALE.
