NOTES BY MONITOR.

Explosion’s good deeds at Christchurch and Wellington recently have evidently impressed the Auckland liandieapper, as the son of Cuirassier and Jadestone has been allotted top weight in the big Summer event, anti it seems to me that fhe task set. him will prove a bit beyond his compass. The pony First Whisper, who hails from the Napier district, evidently carries too many guns for the ponies racing at Potter’s Paddock. On Saturday she, fairly smothered the fields opposed to her, winning both races in a canter.

They give big prizes for trotting events in America, as I notice that the Kentucky Futurity Stakes, which was won by a ebestnut gelding named Boralma, was worth 16,000 dollars. The horse was bought a few days before the event by Mr T. W. Lawson for 17,000 dollars, and his new owner scooped in 25.000 dollars over the race.

The game little St. Paul is striding along freely in ’bis work. and. as he has been leniently treated by Mr Evitt in the Auckland Cup, if be can be brought to the post fit and well the son of St. Leger should render a good account of himself on Boxing Day.

Last- week my selections distinguished themselves considerably. At the Wellington meeting I gave four winners in six attempts, these being First Blood (div. £6). Rosella (div. £1 IS/), Stockade (div. £9 4/), Okoari (div. £5 3/). At Potter's Paddock this was followed up wit'h Billy Wilson, Spreydon. Hollywood, and First Whisper, all these duly catching the judge’s eye first.

The Wellington Trotting Club held a two days’ meeting on Thursday and Saturday at Petone, but the attendance on both days was only limited. The Petone Handicap fell to Czarina, with Viotta second and Prince Albert third. The Hutt Handicap went to Selim, Woile the Railway Handicap was won by Silver Gray, the latter following this up on the second day by taking the Dash Handicap, but was disqualified and the stakes awarded to The General. in the Wellington Trotting Club Handicap Wedlock was first home.

Rosella is evidently returning to form, as her victory at Wellington will bear considerable looking into. She is evidently a fine sprinter and should prove a doughty opponent to Miss Delaval at the Summer Meeting.

The ex-Anstralian Merloolas at latest adivces was a very strong favourite for the Viceroy’s Cup. Whalers always have a lot to say in the big Indian event.

Seahorse on his arrival at beadquarters was reported to be looking very light, but is rapidly improving. He will require to be dressed in bis very best to successfully carry the heavy weight of Bst. 121 b. allotted to him in the Auckland Cup.

• The ex-Auckland pony Archduke won the principal event at the recent Suva (Fiji) meeting, held on the 9th. This was the Priuce of Wales' Stakes, run over 1$ miles, for which there were half-a-dozeu runners, including Ltifrn and a couple of Sydney horses by Lochiel. According to the account given of the race Archduke made the running from the fall of the flag, and won in a canter by three lengths from Lufra. while Trilby was in the other place. In the concluding event, the Stewards’ Handicap, over one mile, the Dauphin's sou started favourite, and after a ding dong race was beaten half a length by Lufra. Archduke was ridden by the well-known amateur Mr F. A. Reade, wlm out of four mounts at the meeting was successful on three occasions, while he finished second on the fourth.

George Wright returned from Wellington in the s.s. Rotoiti. bringing Explosion. Rosella. and Beddington with him.

A Press Association cablegram from London states that the Australianbred horse Ebor. sired by Robert the Devil, won the Purbrook Steeplechase, with Corner second, and Kacemallow third. ® ® ® AUCKLAND R.C.SUMMER MEETING. Mi Evitt has declared the following adjustments for the raws at the coming Summer Meeting. There has been much discussion as to the respective weights of Explosion. Record Reign, and Seahorse Somewhat to the general surprise Mr Roulston’s horse is found on the same mark as the craek three-year-old. both being handicapped at Bst. 121 b., and at this I cannot help fancying that the t astor horse bus the pull of the weights, as many people expected to see him alongside Explosion at the top of the list. Although, of course, when the acceptances are due a great many will drop out, still on a hurried survey of the weights those that strike me as likely to possess chances are Explosion, Record Reign. Douglas. Seahorse, Daunt, Battleaxe, and Coronet. Of course if St. Paul can be brought to the post fit and well he must hold almost, a mortgage on the race, but the hard going will probably prove too much for him.

In the Railway Handicap St. Clements. of course, holds pride of place, and even wit’h the crusher of lOst. 61b. he will have to be reckoned with if as well as at the last. Ellerslie meeting. Blazer has recently put up some good performances and has thereby earned his weight, and of the others Record Reign. Daunt. Okoari. Miss Delaval and Rosella read the likeliest of the bond).

In the Auckland Steeplechase, as might have been expected. Dummy is at the top of the poll with 12sl. 91b.. Nor’-West having 91bs. less. At the present I incline to the chances of Nor’West, Dentist, Muscatel, ami

On M inula v afternoon Explosion was supported for the Auckland ('up at 100’s to 15 and 100’s to 20. A wajFer of 1(M) to 20 was also accepted about Seahorse. The double of Seahorse and Miss Deluval for the Ctip and Kai I way Handicap was supported at GUO to IS, and 500 to 15 was written Seahorse and Rex. A wager of 200 to 12 Battleaxe for fhe ('tip and JtM) io G St. Paul were also written, (up <|aoiali<His are as under: Font to I v Sea-horse, 5 lo 1 v. Explosion. 7 to I v Record Reign, 12 to 1 v. Coronet. )6 to I St. Ilario. St. Paul and Bluejacket, 20 lo ) Tire and Tauhei.

@ @ ® TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB SPRENG MEETING.

Mr R. Wvnvard has virtually coin pleted all the arrangements for lhe Spring Meeting of the T.J C., which coutnieaces on Saturday next. The first day of the Otahubu Trotting Club Spring Meeting took place at Potter’s Paddock on Saturday, and as the went her was perfect the attendance was very considerable. During the afternoon the sum of £3302 was passed through the totalizator. Mr \V. L. Lockhart, the secretary, had al! arrangements efficiently carried out, and the day’s sport proved very interesting. In the Telephone Trot Cob, who was ridden by EHett, won by two yards from Miss llnon, with Einpress a length away third. Mr Lowe, the owner of Miss Huon, entered a protest against the winner for galloping. and this was upheld by the stewards, a verdict that caused a good deal of comment. in the Otahuhu Spring Trot Mr Robinson's Hollywood was successful, and this victory he foWewed up by taking the Harness Trot Handicap, despite a penalty. In the Epsom Pony Ilajidicap a good favourite in First Whisper was first home, and she also annexed the Flying Stakes Handicap, winning l»olh imccs with the greatest of ease. Speculation was fairly good, a. sum of £7160 going through the machine during the two days, as against £5lBO last year. On the big race of the meeting—the Otago Cup—only £6lO was invested, so that it would seem there is still room for considerable improvement before the Houthern club can look forward to a good financial prospect in the future. On the first day the chief event was flic Otago Cup. and for this Fulmen was elected a red-hot favourite. He, •however, had to strike his colours to f he St. Clair griding, Jupiter, who beat him by a length. In the Federal Handicap Paladin scored from a field of eight, while the Salisbury Plate went to a strong favourite in Blazer, who only returned his supporters £1 3s. Both hurdle races fell to Dundee, who on each occasion was followed home by Ilex. Another double winner was the bay mare St. Onida, who captured both welter handicaps, while Blazer also followed up his victory of the first day by securing the Glasgow Plate, these two races proving very •hollow victories for Mr Solomon’s bay gc.di ng. The St. Andrew’s Handicap, ihe mg event of the second day. fell to Mr Hobbs’ Dandas. by °erkin Warbrck IT., who beat Paiadin very easily For this race Jupiter started favourite, but failed to run into a. place. © © © 7 WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. The Wellington Racing Club decided their Spring Meeting- on Wednesday •and Friday last. During the meeting the sum of £15.749 went through the totalisator. this being exactly £4O less than last year. The club have made very considerable improvements in the accommodation for visitors, which proved a great convenience 10 those present. The racing was chiefly remarkable for the fine form displayed by the Auckland horse Explosion. Tn the Wellington Handicap Mr Nathan’s horse started a strong favourite, and finishing with great gameness under punishment managed to defeat an outsider in Tc Hapuku. He followed this up on the second day by securing the Pierce Handcap, in which race he cantered home four lengths in front of Boreas. Another horse to distinguish himself was the two-year-old PJiooka. by Robinson Crusoe—Aphrodite. who after romping home in the Spring Juvenile Stakes, on the first day. fairly smothered his only opponent in the Spring Nursery Handicap on the concluding day. The Auckland ihree-year-old filly Rosella registered a smart performance in the Shorts Handicap, for which she went to the. post a strong favourite, cutting out the five furiengs ini rain 2 4-sthsec, and winning easily by four lengths. In the Pctone Handicap Falka returned the handsome dividend of £69 Ils to his lucky supporters. The details of the racing are as follows:— .WELLINGTON’ HANDICAP of 40050V3.
