NOTES BY MONITOR.

The popular local sportsman. Major George, must have had an exceptionally good meeting at Christchurch recently, as his cheque amounted to £2400, while he is also credited with winning a fair stake in bets. Possibly the owner of the Wapiti stud may be. induced to send his champion. Seahorse, over to Australia to try conclusions with Merriwee, Dewey and Co., but of course his next mission will be the Auckland Cup. Mr T. Uphill, the Indian buyer, made an offer of 2000 guineas for the Caulfield Cup winner Dewey, but no sale was effected, the reserve being 2500 guineas. With such a strong rival in the field as Merriwee. I should have deemed it sound policy of Mr Payten to let the colt go at the figure mentioned. The ex-Australian stallion Carnage has been given a season's rest at Graditz in consequence Of having had a severe attack of influenza some time after he arrived. He made a good recovery, but it was thought best to let him stand over until next year before resuming stud work. The racehorses Seahorse. Miss Delaval, Tauhei. Tolstoi, and Courtier arrived in Auckland on Sunday by fhe s.s. Waihora. The two latter horses have been purchased by H. Franks from Mr G. G. Stead. The Coromandel Racing Club hold a meeting to-day (Wednesday) and tomorrow. Several horses have been sent down from head-quarters, and no doubt the racing at the mining town should prove very interesting. The "Weekly Press" gives an excellent photograph showing the finish for the Welcome Stakes between Romanoff and the Aucklander, Beddington. The pair of two-year-olds are locked together, and it is difficult to see how the judge managed to separate them, although the official verdict gave the result to the Southerner by a nose. Messrs Pine and Co. conducted the annual sale of the Elderslie (Oamaru) yearlings at. Christchurch recently. • The best price was obtained for a bay colt by Stepniak—Bibroch. which fell to Mr Stead’s bid of 210 guineas. Mr Watt, of Hawke’s Bay, purchased a brown filly by Stepniak-—Ranee s'una for 115 guineas. A bay filly by Gipsy Grand—Ladies' Maid went to Mr Dalgety, of Christchurch, for 65 guineas, while the various other lots hardly realised the prices anticipated. Mr S. H. Gollan’s Claek-na-Cuddin and t'he Capt. Webb—Violet geldinghave been sent across to Australia, whence they are to be shipped to England along with his recent purchase, The Australian Star. The English champion three-year-old Flying Fox 'has secured the immense sum of £40,096 in stakes up to the present. As the sou of Orme is engaged in several rich events next season it would seem to be merely a question of health with him beating Donovan’s great record on the turf. At the Agricultural Show last week the American stallion Gilead took first prize for blood stallions. Neither Wellingtcu Park or Sylvia Park were represented.

The following are names of the lucky drawers of winning horses in Tattersail's various consultations on the Melbourne Cup:—No. 1. of 100,000 at £l, closed with 50,000, H. Claussen, Freshwater Cairns, Q„ £13,500; No. 1 (ordinary), of 100,000 at 5/, S. Deeprose, Newcastle. N.S.W., £6750; No. 2 (ordinary), W. M. Kidd. Croydon. Q., £6750; No. 3 (ordinary). 100.000 at 5/, R. T. Kennedy, Warrnambool, Vic., £6750; No. 1 (Special). 100,000 at 5/, J. 11. Lee, Cockburn, S.A., £6750; No. 2 (Special), 100,000 at. 5/, The Tarriro Syndicate, Tarrim, Vic.. £6750. The Hou. W. Long's colt Parthian was sold at the conclusion of the V. Meeting to Mr T. G. Muir for 1450 guineas. At the same time several well-known horses changed bauds, among these being the once brilliantchestnut Hopscotch, whieh J. Hayes secured for 115 guineas. Security fetched 280 guineas, Macaenas (J. Cerf. W. 200 guineas. Ace of Diamonds (H. Roarty), 100 guineas. Wilga (J. Burton). 160 guineas. Beachcomber (S. O. Wood). 140 guineas, and The Hypnotist (G. Edwards), 130 guineas. It is stated that t.he Loehiel horse Le Var, who ran so prominently in the weight-for-age races at the las't Randwick meeting has probably run his last race. The powerful St. Albans stable is evidently out of luck, as not a single win was scored at the recent V.R.C. meeting. The jockey S. Lindsay, who steered Seahorse to victory in the New Zealand Cup, had a good win on the colt, whose owner is reported to have paid him the handsome wager of £560 to nothing about his chance. . Lindsay is reported to have cleared about £lOOO on the race.

Mr J. Roulston’s winnings in stakes at the recent A.R.C. Spring Meeting amounted to £750 10s. Everybody ■was pleased to see the Pukekohe sportsman do so well, as there is no straighter goer on the colonial turf.

The Australian horse Tornado, by Cadogan—Avalanche, won two events at the Hawthorn Hill meeting, England, recently, but for some reason or other had not been sufficiently described, and was accordingly disqualified. The following are the nominations for the Auckland Cup. Mr Evitt will declare the handicaps on November 25th: —Nestor, Regulus. Pickloek, Pitch and Toss, Motto, Fulmen, Coronet, Donneraile, Doctor, Halbadier. Conspirer. Rex, Sirocco, St. Lawrence, Salvaden. Explosion. Hastings, Auld Reekie, Miss Delaval, Knight of Athol, Pokomoko. Battleaxe. Okoari. Hamoa, Cavalier. Uhlan, St. Crispin. St. Paul, Crusoe, Tauhei, Castashore. First Blood. Tirade, Admiral Hawke, Tire, Douglas, Oingo. Koromatnku, Record Reign, Swordfish 11., Chancellor, Cadiz, Seahorse, The Labourer, El Draque, Impregnable, Lady Ellen, Eketerina. Passepororo, Djin-Djin, Sant Ilario, Skobeloff, Daunt,, Sir Lancelot, Reliance, North Star, Deadbeat, Bluejacket, Bush Rose. ® ® ® — OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB SPRING MEETING. Next Saturday the Otahuhu Club will make a start with their Spring Meeting, and as the acceptances are numerous the racing should prove interesting. The gates have been disposed of to Mr 11. Adams for £BO, the cards to Messrs Cleave and Co. for £45, and the booths for £7l to Mr VV. Abbott. Mr C. F. .Marks, the energetic secretary, has all the arrangements well well in hand, and if only the weather proves fine there should be a large attendance of the public. In perusing flic acceptances I must put a tick against the following horses as being likely to furnish the winners: — Maiden Trot—Billy Wilson. Otahuhu Spring Trot—Lady Retford. Harness Trot— Hollywood. Telephone Trot — Yum Yum or Ebony. Maiden Pony.—Spreydon. Hurdle Race—llinemoa or Little Tom. Epsom Pony-—Topsail. Flying Stakes—First Whisper.
