Dear Bee. October 16. The exceedingly pretty grounds of the

NELSON BOWLING CLUB presented a most gay appearance on Saturday afternoon, when the season was opened by the president. Mr W. Rout. The gardens were looking lovely, and the large green was as usual in perfect order, whilst the bright and pretty dresses of the ladies present added to the brilliant scene. A most delicious afternoon tea (fruit, salad, etc.) was provided by Mrs M. Rout, wife of the president. assisted by Mrs G. Kerr and the

Misses Coote. The table decorations were both artistic and pretty, purple Iris lilies were arranged in tall vases, whilst smaller ones held pansies of the same hue. Mrs W. Rout wore a becoming blouse of light silk, dark skirt, hat en suite; Mrs G. Kerr, silk blouse of blue and white check, black skirt, sailor hat; the Misses Coote wore pretty light blouses, dark skirts, and white sailor hats; Mrs Preshaw, black; Mrs Worthington (Invercargill) looked well in a pink blouse- and hat, black skirt; Mrs Robinson, black finished with yellow; Mrs A. Glasgow looked very well in a smart tailor-made eoat and skirt of grey cloth, black hat with pink roses beneath the brim; Miss M. Glasgow, white muslin over pink, with pink ribbons, sailor hat trimmed with pink ribbons; Mrs Patterson, black and white: Mrs Levien, black gown, bonnet- with heliotrope: Miss Levien looked well in black crepon finished with white satin and chiffon, large black hat; Miss Cohen, black, bonnet relieved with pink; Mrs Kissling, blaek and white check blouse finished with pink, black skirt, sailor hat; Miss Richmond, red silk blouse, dark skirt, small hat; Mrs Edwards, black; Miss Edwards, navy, pretty white gem bat; Miss E. Edwards, green costume, hat to match; Miss Sealy, green coat and skirt, sailor hat; Miss F. Sealy, black, with vest of black and white silk, sailor hat; Miss Trix Atkinson, navy costume, blaek hat; Miss Heaps, white pique, hat en suite; Miss A. chic hat. THE BOATING SEASON was opened the same afternoon. The weather was perfect for the rowing boats, but there was not sufficient breeze for sailing. Afternoon tea was provided in one of the sheds by the Club, assisted by Mrs Walker. Miss Reeves, and others. The tables were prettily arranged with arum lilies and blue and white ribbons, the colours of the Club. As there were two functions arranged for the same afternoon, it was thought by some that one or other might suffer for wantof sufficient patronage, but this was by no means the ease, for we all went

first to one and then to the other, and the Port Road presented quite an animated appearance with cabs, ’buses, and trams rushing backwards and forwards, filled with gaily dressed people, all anxious to get as much pleasure as possible in the afternoon. More bright and pretty dresses were to be seen here. Webb Bowen, blue blouse, navy skirt, sailor hat; the Misses A. and F. Edwards also wore light blouses and dark skirts, sailor hats; the Misses Garrard (2), white pique dresses, stylish

hats; Miss Mabel Atkinson, green and white striped cambric; Mrs Ralph Jackson, light silk blouse, black skirt, large black hat with red roses beneath the brim; Miss Gelately, light cambric; Miss E. Ledger, white muslin; Miss Dorothy Bell, white; Mrs Bell, black; and many others.
