NOTES BY MONITOR.

'Among our illustrations this week will be found a capital portrait of Miss Gorrie, who piloted Jimmy iu the Point to Point Steeplechase organised by the Pakuranga Hunt Club. Miss Gorrie is a most accomplished horsewoman. and lias always been amongst the first flight across country, so that her position as first lady home in the recent race eame as no surprise to her many admirers.

Admirers of that sterling little champion St. Paul will be sorry to see that his name has disappeared from the list of acceptances for the A’.Z. Cup. The son of St. Leger has been restricted to walking exercise during the week, so that it would seem that the leg has gone back on him again. This is hard luck for his early backers, as if St. Paul could have been got to the post fit and well, he would have bgen very handy when the whips were cracking. Anyone following my selections in the last issue of the "Graphic” would have hail an uncommonly good week. At Potter’s Paddock 1 selected Ebony, Hirst Whisper. Old Judge and Yum Yum, who all got safely home. At Wanganui on the first day in five attempts 1 returned three winners, these being Crusoe (dividend £5 2/), Trouliadonr (dividend £lO 5/) and Gowrie (dividend £5 4/). To complete the list I took Dewey to win the Caulfield Cup. which it must be admitted is a fairly good record.

Dewey, who won the Caulfield Cup nn Saturday was bred by his owner, Mr V. Payten. and is by Lochiel from Donna, the latter mare having been presented to the popular trainer by the late Mr White. At the recent A.J.C. Meeting Dewey registered a good performance by winning the Spring Stakes, putting down a number of good performers at weight-for-age, while he subsequently ran into third place in the Metropolitan Handicap. Dewey is engaged in the Melbourne Cup. in which he was allotted 6.8, but incurs a 141 b penalty for his win in the Caulfield Cup. The superstitions crowd who believe in omens and coincidences should cer-. taiiily follow the .Admirals for the coming big handicaps. Dewey, named after the hero of Manilla, has won the Caulfield t up, Seahorse, a son of Nelson, England’s greatest admirtal, should go very close to the New Zealand Cup; while for the big event at Flemington there is the South Australian horse Fleet Admiral to be reckoned with.

To-morrow (Thursday) the big back end handicap, the Cambridgeshire, will be run in England. For this Mazeppa stands at 9 to 1, while a point longer is on offer against Oban; while Ercildoune is at 14 to 1. Oban is one of the horses sent from Australia last

year, and it is to be hoped he will render a good account of himself.

The first two-year-old-race of the season in New South Wales took place on the 19th inst, and fell to Gonaro. who is a son of the New Zealand bred sire Medallion. The news of Lancaster’s win in the Maiden Plate at Caulfield last Saturday must have been gratifying to his many Auckland admirers, but the performance is not a particularly meritorious one. as he was opposed by but two moderates, and one of these was badly left, yet finished within a length of the Wellington Park colt. This does not augur too well for his Derby prospects, as it would seem that the son of Hotchkiss was stopping at the end of a mile, but possibly he is on the improve, and may yet prove dangerous at Flemington. Mr A. Gollan’s black colt Australian Star is evidently a cut above the ordinary, as he defeated a good field last Thursday at Caulfield iu the Eclipse Stakes, a weight-for-age race over a mile. The son of The Australian Peer was last till they reached the straight, but ran home at a tremendous pace, eventually winning easily by three lengths. The Star it will lie remembered also won at Randwick, so that it would seem that it is a goed thing for Cranberry, Scorn and Co. that the Peer's son is not entered in the V.R.C. Derby. Mr Oxenham's brown horse Gauleon very narrowly missed taking the Caulfield Cup, in which he finished second. He is undoubtedly' improving with every gallop, and may yet emulate the good deeds of his doughty brothers, Gaulus and The Grafter, in the big race at Flemington next month. There sems to be a fatality in the Caulfield Cup against the favourites winning, as there is only one instance on record of this happening, this being in 1883 when Calma won. On Saturday Mora was backed for a lot of money, starting first favourite, but finished out of a place. ® © ® AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. Very good entries and acceptances have been received for the spring meeting of the A.R.C., which will be held at Ellerslie on November 4th, 9th. and 11th. In the Handicap Hurdles twelve are left in and Splinter is looking so well and doing such good work that he should find 10.8 none too much for him, while Straybird and Dentist are bound to prove dangerous. In the City Handicap seventeen remain in with that fine horse Record Reign at the top of the poll with 9.2, a weight he is fully capable of carrying. If Crusoe should come north he must be thereabouts with 8.5, while Firefly and St. Ursula both have undeniable chances. Red Lancer will finde 7.11 a handy weight to carry, and as good reports keep coming to hand concerning his track work it will be a mistake to overlook the son of St. Clair.

A good many horses have gone outof the big race to be decided at Christchurch next month, the most noteworthy of which, from an Auckland point of view, are St. Paul and Coronet. A field of twenty-two has been left, for which Douglas remains at the head of the poll with 9.4 opposite his name. My early selection, Fulman and Bush Rose, are both left in, and I hear very good accounts of the former from Dunedin, where he is doing a capital preparation, but Bush Rose does not seem to be himself yet. The Auckland colt Seahorse ranks as an even favourite, with Sir Lancelot. and despite his 71bs. penalty Major George’s colt must be very dangerous. Sir Lancelot has been very heavily supported, the Napier folk being very keen on his chance. Jupiter is another of the dangerous division, and so far the son of St. Clair is doing all he has been requested. I notice Mr Stead has paid up for Skobeloff and St. Ilario, and of the former I have heard some very flattering reports, but money seems to have gone on the latter lately. Miss Delaval is reported to be doing

good work, but I cannot help thinking that two miles is a trifle beyond her limit. I shall be able to sum the matter up and make a final selection to more advantage next week. © © © CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB’S SPRING MEETING. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. WANGANUI J.C. SPUING MEETING. The Spring Meetingof the Wang mui Jockey Club took place last Thursday aud Friday, and although the goiug wm heavy, yet the -weather proved beautifuly tine, and the attendance good. A sum of £12.090 was put through the tfitalisator, this being an increase over last year of £ 1753. There were several cases of suspicious running. especially on the second day. In the Owen Stakes Okoari ran home s very easy winner by four lengths, whereupon her owner was called in by the stewards to explain the wonderful improvement shown by the mare over her display on the first day. The stewards decided' that there was not sufficient evidence to justify the stakes being withheld, but they were not satisfied that the horse had been properly run the day before. In the Hack Flying Handicap the owner of Dr. Bill was also called to account, and th*, stewards decided to warn the ridei (Birkett) off the course, his license being cancelled. In the last race there was yet another unpleasantness, as after Battleaxe had won the Marangai Stakes, an inquiry was held and it was decided that the' stakes go to Sedgebrook, the second horse, while Connop, who rode the winner, was suspended during the pleasure of the Club. It is a good sign to see stewards making such a firm stand as this to purify the

sport. The following are the particulars of the racing: — Hack Hurdles.—Hutana 1, Frost 2, Nay born 3. Won easily. Scratched: Omnia. Bulrush. Time 2.59. Dividend, £4 3/. Hurdles. —Troubadour 1, Hangfire 2, Derry 3. Scratched: Nipapu and Aquatic. A good race. Time 4.4. Dividend £lO 5/.

Hack Flat.—Oracle 1, Southerly Buster 2, Gowrie 3. Dividend £26 3/. Flying Handicap.—Tupuhi 1, Sedgebrook 2. The Hempie 3. Time 1.17. Dividend £ 4 6/.

Wanganui Stakes.—Sirocco, 1; Kubin 2; Toa, 3. Bush Rose also started. Sirocco led all the way and won by a neck. Time, 2.44. Dividend, £8 2/. Hack Hurdles. —Tui 1; Hutana 2; Waylay 3. All started. Won easily. The race was a chapter of accidents, only the three placed horses finishing. Time 2.57 2-5. Dividend £ 4 8/. Final Haek. —Redoubt, 1; Southerly Buster 2; Wilson 3. Won by ti>o lengths. Scratched —Myra. Lightning. Time, 2min. 3 l-sth secs. Dividend, £l4 9s.

Marangai Stakes. — Battleaxe 1; Sedgebrook 2; Bona-fide 3. Also started: The Hempie, The Miller, Return, and Lady Helen. A very interesting race from the start saw Battleaxe win by three parts of a length from Sedgebrook, Lady Helen third. Time, 1.47 2-ss. Totalisator, £983. Dividend, £3 8/. Immediately after the race the stewards held an inquiry on Battleaxe’s running of the previous day. After evidence, the stewards decided that Battleaxe be distanced in this race, and that the stakes go to Sedgebrook, Battleaxe’s jockey to be suspended during the pleasure of the club. Dividend on Sedgebrook, £lO 3/.

® ® ® VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB.

On Saturday the V.A.T.C. concluded their spring meeting under very favourable circumstances, the weather being fine and the attendance large. The big event of the day was, of course, the Caulfield Cup, and for this a field of twenty one started. The Sydney mace Mora was heavily backed, and she went out a favourite at 4 to 1 against, the St. Alban’s candidate Scorn figuring at a point longer. The race was a very interesting one, and the field was well together when they turned into the straight, at which point Scorn was in command. At the distance post Gauleou and Dewey were fighting it out, and the latter lasting the longer, wop by three quarters of a length, with Ballistite a length further back. In the Maiden Plate, which opened the day’s proceedings, the Aucklandbred colt Lancaster scored his initial win, but it cannot be said that the son of Hotchkiss accomplished anything remarkable, as he had but two opponents, and one of these was left at the post. The Oby Hurdle Race fell to Messrs Manifolcfs bay mare Cintra, by Wellington—Musk Deer, who beat a field of eight runners. In the Wyuna Steeplechase Mr Kidman’s grey horse Snapshot won Very easily from twelve opponents.

Mr W. It. Wilson provided the winner of the Gwyn Handicap, a two-year-old rtutter over four furlongs aud a half. There were twenty starters, and the St. Alban's gelding Debenture, the sire of which is either Eiridspord or Wallace. won easily by two lengths, in 57 js.

The Windsor Handicap concluded the meeting, a field of eighteen stripping for this. Symmetry ranked as favourite, but finished out of a place, the little thought of Security winning by three quarters of a length from Royal Purple.

® ® ® AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

Last Wednesday the A.T.C. finished their spring meeting, which passed off very satisfactorily, a sum of £5336 going through the totalisator in the two days. Mr C. F. Mark’s management left nothing to be wished for, and everything passed off without a hitch. In the October Trot Handicap for once in a while Old Judge was in a trotting humour, aud the aged son of Judge Belden won pretty easily from a strong opposition. In the Class Trot Handicap Yum Yum demonstrated that her win on the first day was not a fluke, as she romped home ahead of Old Judge and Bob E.T.
