Dear Bee, October 3. On Wednesday evening a PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE PARTY was given by Mrs Levien at her residence, Nile Street, when a most delightful evening was spent. There

were twelve tables, Miss Curtis winning the first ladies’ prize, a lovely gold pin, and Mr R. Catiey the gentlemen’s, a handsome pipe ; the booby prizes fell to Mrs A. Mackay and Mr A. Selanders. Play was continued with very great enthusiasm till after eleven o’clock, when a most recherche supper was partaken of. There was every dainty for which one could possibly wish, including oysters, ices, jellies and sweets of all kinds. The fable decorations were lovely, consisting of red and white flowers. Mrs Levien, assisted by her daughter, received her guests in a handsome gown of black silk and jet ; Miss Levien wore a dainty blouse of green and white silk, black satin skirt ; Miss Cohen (Mrs Levien’s sister) wore black silk relieved with white lace ; Mrs A. Selanders looked charming in white, the handsomest dress in the room, composed of rich ivory satin with trimmings of real lace ; Mrs A. P. Burnes looked well in black satin, with berthe of sapphire blue velvet and pearls, black aigrette in her hair; Mrs Sweet, buttercup satin, brightened with blue velvet on the bodice ; Mrs A. Glasgow looked well in black satin and jet ; Mrs Kissling, ivory corded silk trimmed with handsome lace ; Mrs Andrew, white broche satin ; Mrs Donald (Dunedin), becoming gown of black satin finished with blue chiffon; Mrs Booth, claret coloured satin ; Mrs Richardson looked well in ivory silk ; Mrs A. Mackay, black ; Miss Gribben, heliotrope silk finished with soft white lace ; Miss Richmond, black silk with cream roses on the bodice ; Miss Gibson, light blue silk and chiffon ; Miss A. Bell, white broche silk, red sash ; Miss Edwards, pretty blouse of pink silk relieved with scarlet ; Miss (’. Jones, pink veiling ; Miss Heaps, handsome gown of white broche satin ; Miss Webb (Dunedin), soft white silk ; Miss F. Webb Bowen, pink silk ; Miss Robertson, handsome gown of black satin and jet : Miss Preshaw looked well in white ; Miss Kelling (West Coast), pink with chiffon trimmings. Amongst the gentlemen present were Messrs Levien (3), Muir, Wratt, Bell, P. Adams. Richardson, Booth. Glasgow, A. P. Burnes, Mackay, Catiey, Duncan, A. Selanders. Wither. The Nelson College Dramatic Society’s performance of Shakespeare's

“MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING” in the Theatre Royal on Friday evening was in every way a great success, and much credit and praise is due to Mr E. F. W. Cooke, the energetic, stage manager, who received a well deserved call before the curtain at the close of the performance. The comedy was very well mounted, and all the dresses were most effective and handsome. The different parts were capitally taken by the boys and their grown-up friends—chiefly ladies. The cast was as follows :—Don Pedro, A. Kempthorne ; Don John, G. Rogers; Claudio, R. Fell ; Benedick. Mr Drummond ; Leomato, J. Houlker ; Antonio, N. Adams ; Balthazar, R. Gilbert; Borachio and Conrade, G. Boyes and A. Selanders ; Dogberry and Verges, H. Stanton and W. Houlker ; sexton, E. T. Rogers ; Friar, T. Bowie ; Boy, R. Brewster ; Hero, Miss Fell ; Beatrice, Miss Gribben ; Margaret, Miss Sealy ; Ursula, Miss Leggatt ; Messenger, H. Cock ; Watchmen, H. Watts, Furness, and C. Hursthouse. Miss Gribben's first costume was a skirt of dark green velvet with corsage and a train of bright pink, which was very effective ; her second costume was both handsome and becoming, the petticoat being of cream silk embroidered with silver, and the bodice and train of bright green silk ; Miss Fell wore a combination of orange satin and light blue, which suited her well, she was also admired in her bridal robe of rich ivory satin embroidered with gold ; Miss Sealy wore a trained skirt of rich blue silk, velvet bodice with pearl trimmings ; Miss Leggatt, black velvet and jet with pink train. Amongst the audience were noticed Mesdames Mules, Richmond, Selanders (2), Houlker, Littlejohn, E. F. W. Cooke, Wing, Tomlinson, Heaps, Leggatt, Watts (2), Sweet, 11. Horton (Blenheim), Bell, Hudson, Cock, Fell, the Misses Gibson, Pearce, Richmond, Webb, Cock, Mules, A. Bell, Ledger (2), Gibbs (3), Tomlinson (2), Fell (2), Talbot (2), D. Bell, Harris, Sealy, Leggatt, Graham, etc., etc.

On Friday a very pleasant afternoon tea was given at Mrs A. P. Burnes’ residence by Mrs Donald of Dunedin, who has made many friends during her short visit here.
