THE CUTTER VINA.
\\ »* jrivr herewith a picture of the cutter \ ina. which was wrecked at Waihckc during the severe gale last month. The boat was caught by the storm when near Rocky Bay. Waiheke. and endeavoured to run fi r sh *lter then, but it was impossible to find shelter at that point, ami so the master. Mr McCormick, made for Putijki Bay. Arrived there?. two anchors were put down, hut the vessel continued to drag all the day. ami at 2 o'clock in the morning, as she was h ‘ading for the reef, the cables were slippeel, and she was run on to the beach. The two men were thrown against the companion when the vessel struck, and they then went forward and waiteel for an opportunity to get ashore. They had to swim through a heavy sea. but got safely to the* beach, almost exhausted. I'lit* dinghy had been swamped during the* gale* ami could not be* used. They went up to a Maori whare. where* they were received and hospitably lookeel after. The cutter was badly smashed up. and all the cargo destroyer!. At about 1 o'clock in the day. while* the* Vina was at anchor in Pirtiki Bay. a high whi, rlwind. about 30 feet through, and carrying water in a solid mass to a height of about io feet, passed within a f w
feet of the* boat, the* edge not being more* than three yards away. Had the* cutter been struck by this she would probably have been overturned and the* crew probably drowned, as she* was some* distance from the* beach.
