COUNTRY CORRESPONDENCE.

My Paeroa. correspondent writes: — Dear Bee, —The first of the series of progressive euchre evenings which are to be held fortnightly during the winter months eventuated at the residence of Mrs Gooch on last Frida v night. Everyone enjoyed these evenings very much last winter. So 1 trust they will prove equally successful this’ season. It was intended to have had eight tables, but unfortunately owing to the wet night some of the members were prevented fr< in coming so there were only six tables.

Hut those who did brave the elements were rewarded, for a most delightful evening was spent. Play was kept up with great spirit until eleven o'clock, when a most dainty supper was handed round. The following ladies form the Committee: —Mrs Gooch. Mrs Forbes. Mrs Brunskill. Mrs Pratt. Mrs E. Edwards. The prizes were won by Miss Orr. Miss Wight. Mr Malfroy. and Mr Vercoe. Mv Hamilton correspondent writes: THE MASONIC BALL On Thursday evening. 22nd June, was a delightful success. The Volunteer Hall was unrecognisable with the artistic decorations and brilliant lighting. The incandescent lamps were shaded with pretty yellow crinkled paper shades, which had a charming effect; the floor was in capital order, the music just lovely, supper. delightful. and partners numerous. The masonic ball of 1899 will long be remembered by all those who were present. Le Quesne. white: Mrs Qualthrough. black silk: Mrs Sare. black: etc. From Coromandel comes the news: — Dear Bee. —The annual ball of the Coromandel Lawn Tennis Club took place last Friday evening in the Caledonian Hall. There were about forty couples present. An energetic committee carried out the arrangements

for the comfort of those present in an excellent manner and altogether the gathering was a most enjoyable one. The hall was tastefully decorated with flags, evergreens and tennis requisites. The stage was furnished with comfortable settees, etc., for the comfort of the chaperones and non-dancers. Mr L. E. Mair acted as master of ceremonies and fulfilled the duties in a highly satisfactory manner. The supper and music were all that could be desired. During the evening fhe President (Mr A. J. Litten) presented the prizes to the following ladies and gentlemen, who are the winners of the various sets in the tournament for the season: —Ladies' Singles. Miss Horne; Gentlemen's Singles. Mr C. R. Walker: Men's Doubles, Messrs Cheesman and G. Steedman; Combined Doubles. Mr A. H. Gatland and Miss Harrison. The trophy presented by the President was won by Mr A. F. Billing.
