There seems some probability of the dull and tiresome Newfoundland fishery dispute being settled. The Commission appointed to inquire into the questions endorse Newfoundland’s case, and propose that French fishermen be allowed free bait on condition that bounties are abolished. They also advise that French cod and lobster fishing rights be extinguished by purchase. The Italian Government are determined to stamp out brigandism in Sicily. A systematic clearing raid of their haunts is now being made—and this week troops captured '5O and killed 7 of a notorious band. These brigands had in league with them provincial Mayors, Government officials. landlords, etc., etc. Their levies amounted to some £6OO annually. There are half a dozen similar bands in Sicily, and as they are protected by the peasantry, hotelkeepers and small farmers, their capture is very difficult.
