BOWLING.
DEVONPORT BOWLING CLUB. LADIES’ DAY. For several weeks past much interest was shown by some of the wives and daughters of members of the Devonport Bowling Club when it became known that they were to be allowed to take part in ‘ye ancient game of bowls,’ and that a day would be set apart at the close of the season w hen they would compete for prizes kindly offered to the members of the Club. At different times the'ladies were to be seen practising on the green, when many of them showed excellent play, sometimes being coached by one of the sterner sex, and at other times watching the play of the members. Bventually the tournament for the championship was played off on Wednesday, the 19th inst., there being twelve entries, the game being nine heads up, four bowls each. Great interest was shown by the onlookers as
lhe games proceeded, more especially when the last draw was reached. The final was played off between Miss Eagleton and Miss Stewart, and after a well contested game, resulted in Miss Stewart winning the championship by one point. At the conclusion of the match, the President (Mr A. Harvey), in very complimentary terms, spoke of the excellent play shown by some of the ladies, and hoped it would be tin* foierunner of many future gatherings on the green. He also made a few appropriate remarks when presenting the prizes, which consisted of a handsome gold brooch to Miss Slewart. and a dozen cabinet photos to Miss Eagleton. the donors being Messrs Tobias and S. Vaile. The President thanked the ladies and other visitors, some of whom came from Auckland, for their attendance, as showing their interest in the game. Mrs Malcolm, in a very happy little speech, returned thanks on behalf of lhe ladies, thanking the Club for the privilege of playing and the prizes given.
Cheers were given for the champion and president—thus the first ladies' bow ling tournament held in Auckland wns successfully brought, to a close. An excellent tea was provided, presided over by Mesdames Mitchell and Erater.
