In France the state lias a monopoly for the sale of matches and tole aeeo. Nearly 35.1100,000 matches were manufactured in France during 1897 and about 50.000.000 were brought from other countries. About 900 matches per head is the estimated annual consumption of matches in France. The profit upon these was nearly £BOO,OOO.
