A ROYAL ROMANCE.
The following romantic story is related of the late Queen Olga of Wurtemberg. As the favourite daughter of the Czar Nicholas I. she was acknowledged to be, when in her first youth, the most beautiful princess in Europe. When only eighteen, Prince Bariatinsky, a young officer of the Imperial Guard, fell madly in love with the Grand Duchess Olga, who returned his love and agreed to fly with him to Europe, where they could be married. Prince Bariatinsky’s loyalty, however, overcame his love, and he confessed the plan to the Czar, who was so much struck by the honesty of the young officer that he raised him to a high post in the army. His Majesty had, no cause to regret his clemency, for Prince Bariatinsky remained a faithful servant to his sovereign. He died quite an old man ait one of the royal eastles near Warsaw, unmarried, having said he could never find a woman worthy to be his wife, after having loved and Been loved by the Grand Duchess Olga of Russia.
The Princess was shortly after the episode married to the laite King of Wurtemberg, to whom she proved a faithful, affectionate wife, and their union though not blessed with children was extremely happy.
