SHAREMARKET.
The Exchange formally opened to business on the 4th of January, but transactions were not numerous, as some of the brokers had not returned from holiday trips. The market, however, opened well, as far as prices offered by buyers were concerned. Talisman shares were sold at 12/, and more could have been placed at the same rate. May Queen shares were firmer, being asked for at 4/4, but sellers eeased to quote. Kuranui Caledonian shares were dealt in at 1/2. and had steady buyers throughout the week at 1/1. Several lines of Woodstocks sold at from 8/3 to 8/. but subsequently buyers dropped off. Tararu Creeks firmed a little, being wanted at 1/9. Grace Darlings were also in request at a slight advance, IOJd being offered. Four-in-Hands were a little dearer owing to the good work done in respect to the erection of the battery. Waitekauris had steady demand at 32/, but no shares were offered under 35/. bunker's Hill shares advanced during the week from buyers 1/6 to 1/10. but no reason transpired for the rise. The gold returns to hand for the week are satisfactory, as serving to show that the Coromandel mines promise well for the New Year. The Kapanga was a much better return than usual, while that from the Hauraki was well up to former averages. The year just commenced should prove a much better one than that recently closed, as the gold returns ought to still further increase because the Four-in-Hand and Alpha batteries should be at work before long, and increased crushing power is to be obtained by several companies. At the Great Barrier Island, also, a crushing plant will most probably be erected by the Barrier Beef Company within the next six months. Altogether the present outlook is satisfactory.
