ON his return journey from Wanganui to Wellington Lord Ranfurly spent a night at Eketahuna with his ’staff trout fishing, returning to Wellington the following day.

The Agent-General has forwarded to the \ ietoria College Council the testimonials and applications of one hundred applicants for ; he professorial vacancies. In addition th re are forty- or fifty aplicants in Australia and New Zealand. These will be considered by the Council between the fourth and eleventh January.

Mr George Blandford, who lost his life in the fire at the Royal Oak Hotel. Wellington, on the 10th inst., was general manager for Bing. Harris and Co., and he had held that position since January. At one time he was employed by Butterworth Bros., in Dunedin, and he left that firm to accept a responsible position with

Sargood, Son and Ewen, thence being promoted to the position held at the time of his death. Mr Blandford was 60 years of age. He had his headquarters in Dunedin. He was also well known in commercial circles. Mrs Blandford is well known in Dunedin as an accomplished pianist, whose services were always available in local entertainments. Mr Blandford left a large family.

Amongst the various visitors to and from New Plymouth are the following:—Mrs Mac Diarmid, who has been spending some months in Sydney, returned home last week. Mrs Douglas and Miss Shaw have gone for a trip down South. Miss Kyngdon is on a visit to Mrs Watkins of Wellington.

Master S. Paul and Miss G. Paul have gone for a trip to Auckland. Mrs T. Baker and family-, of Waitara, are in Auckland for Christmas, seeing much of the Rev. F. and Miss Larkins and the rest of the family. Miss Irene Goldwater is spending her Christmas holidays with her grandmother. Mrs Mendelssohn, of Auckland. Messrs T. Shaw and L. Woodhouse and Salter are spending their Christinas holiday’s in Auckland. Miss O. Rawson, of Wellington, is paying a visit to Mrs Courtney, of New Pl vmouth.

Miss Ferguson has returned to Blenheim from a very enjoyable visit to Wellington.

Mrs Mitchelson gives a large garden party- at her beautiful residence, ‘Waitaramoa.’ Remuera. Auckland, on Saturday, January- 31st.

Miss Lily Fell, of Nelson, who is soon to be married, has received from her pupils at the School of Music, a handsome set of afternoon teaspoons.

Miss Dyer, of Wellington, is visiting Blenheim, and is the guest of Mrs Louis Bright.

Miss St. Hill (Hawke's flay) is the guest of Mrs W. Pharazyn in Hobsonstreef.

Mrs McMillan and family (Auckland) have left for their country residence. ‘Dunmore,' Waingaro.

Mr H. W. Northcroft was in Auckland last week. He is Stipendiary Magistrate at Wanganui.

Mrs Harry Gorrie and family, of Onehunga, have gone to Tamaki for six weeks.

The Bishop of Nelson laid the foundation stone of the Suter Art Gallery (Nelson) on Wednesday afternoon.

The energetic Chairman of the Auckland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr James Stichbury, left last week for a combined business and pleasure trip to Australia. But he has no intention of forgetting the Hospital work, in which he takes such an interest, as he proposes to visit the chief hospitals he comes across and make any notes of improvements in their management over the one in Auckland.

Mr W. Canavan, of the staff of the Loan and Mercantile, Blenheim, has gone to Westport to attend the funeral of his brother, Mr E. O'Hara Canavan, who was some years ago editor of the Marlborough ‘Daily Times.'

Miss Edith Webbe (Auckland) has won the scholarship at Mrs MooreJones’ School, Remuera. At the breaking-up of the school last week presentations were made by the pupils to the Misses Moore-Jones.

Dr. Gale, of Kaikoura, has been spending a week in Blenheim, and during that time has been the guest of Dr. and Mrs Anderson.

Mr J. AV. Joynt, M.A., who has resigned his position as Principal of the Boys’ College, Nelson, was presented by his late pupils and staff with a handsome silver ink-stand and candlesticks. On Saturday evening Mr Joynt was entertained by- a large number of ‘old boys,’ who presented him with an address and beautiful silver and gold cigar case. Mr Joynt will be much missed in Nelson, not only as a popular master, but also in society, where he has always been an acquisition.

Mrs E. Parsons, of Kaikoura, is visiting Blenheim, and is staying with her mother. Mrs T. Redwood, at Bl vthefield.

Misses Myers, of Sunnyside, Auckland, gave an afternoon tea on Thursday. 22nd. at ‘Kia Ora’ Tea-rooms, Exhibition.

Mr Sarsfield Colclough will be in charge of the Christ College Rifles of Canterbury at the forthcoming Military- Tournament. He is a fine specimen of an Auckland native, being an enormous fellow- over 6 feet 4 inches in height. Many old Aucklanders will remember his late mother, ‘Polly Plum.’

Mrs Daubney (nee Miss Mabel Fell) and her little girl have gone from Sydney to Nelson for several weeks' visit in order to escape the Australian heat. They are staying w-ith Mr and Mrs Fell, ‘St. John’s.’

Mrs Rees and Miss Mildred Rees took their departure from Blenheim last week, to return to Wellington. Mr and Mrs Cotter, of Remuera, Auckland, and their family (three daughters and soil) leave for England in January next.

Miss F. Sealy, of Nelson, has gone for a trip to Auckland and the Te Aroha Hot Springs.

Mr Cadman is expected to remain in Auckland until March.

After the holidays the Premier will visit the West Coast.

Miss Rawson, of Christchurch, is staying in Nelson with Mrs Humphries.

Mrs Merewether, whose recent visit to Blenheim was owing to the serious illness and death of uer father, Mr W. G. Rees, has now returned to Hastings.

Mr and Mrs C. de V. Teschemaker returned to Blenheim from their trip to the South on Saturday evening and drove out to ‘Avondale’ y-esterday.

A great many Auckland people intend to spend their Christmas down at Waiwera—Mr and Mrs John Roach and son. Miss Fenton. Mr Simpson, Mr Wright and family- (Mt. Albert), etc.

Miss E. Atkinson, of Christchurch, is spending her holidays with her mother. Mrs W. Atkinson. Nelson.

The Misses Beauchamp (2), of ‘Anikiwa,’ Queen Charlotte's Sound, are at present in Blenheim.

Mr and Mrs F. Trask have returned to Nelson after a short visit to Auckland.

Mr J. Whiteley King, recently engaged in journalism in New South Wales, is on a visit to Wellington.

Owing to the resignation of Captain Kemsley, the Fire Brigade Committee recommend advertising inviting applications for the position to the 23rd January, at a salary of £250 and free quarters, age not exceeding forty-five.

Mr J. C. Hanna, who was promoted from the position of manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company in Wellington to that of Inspector of the Company, left for Auckland on Thursday- after an absence of 2 years from the colony, during which time he has visited the Company's branches in various parts of the world. He came from the Cape on the last trip of the Ruahine, and on arriving at Hobart he was ordered to bed owing to illhealth. He was laid up there for a fortnight, and he is still far from well.

The Minister of Lands and Mr Ritchie, Secretary for Agriculture, went Soutli on Wednesday.

Mr J. F. Wilson, of Greymouth, spent a few days in Blenheim last week. He has now- returned to the Coast.

Mr W. M. Bankart, Te Mata, passed through Hamilton on Thursday to spend Christmas in Auckland.

Miss Maggie Nash (I’icton). a pupil of the Nelson Girls’ College, is becoming famous as a prize taker. This year she has taken scholarships to the value of £l5, and £l2 12/ respectively-, and though only in the V. form, she beat several VI. form pupils, coming close up to the winner of the principal scholarship. She also won the ‘Old Girls’ prize for general work. Picton people have a right to eb proud of their girls.

The express trains from Wellington to New Plymouth, which now run four times a week are crowded with passengers en route for Auckland on a holiday trip to the Exhibition.

Colonel Williams, M.P., visited NewPlymouth on December 17th. and then proceeded on to Wellington.

Miss Wilson (Hamilton) has gone South to spend her holidays.

Mr and Mrs F. M. Wallace leave Christchurch on the 27th of December for Sydney via Wellington to join the Oroya. The holidays have not come one day too soon for Mr Wallace, he looks greatly- needing rest.

Mr Petrie, of the ‘Otago Witness ’ staff, is at present in Pieton taking photos, and obtaining information anent the lions of the district.

Lady Ranfurly has presented a prize to the New Plymouth High School for English history.

Mr and Mrs W. Locke Travers left Wellington by- the Te Anau on Wednesday- afternoon for the South, and intend going on a driving tour through the Otira Gorge.

Miss Tyers. head nurse of the Hawera Hospital, is at present on a visit to Mrs Graham, ‘The Lodge,’ Hamilton.

Miss Jervois was in Christchurch for a day or two last week, which she spent with Mrs Bowen, Middleton. and has now- returned to Wellington.

Mr Morris, agent in Picton for the Union Company, is away fot ,iis annual leave. Mr Nancarrow-, of the Dunedin office, is in charge at Picton.

Mrs G. Fitzgerald (Wellington) and family arrived in Picton, per Rotorua, for the Christmas holidays.

Mrs Broughton and Miss Young, of Merivale, have gone to New Brighton for a change. Mrs Broughton since breaking up her home has made no settled plans, but will probably go to England before long.

Mr and Mrs John Duncan (Wellington) have gone to Lowry Bay for the Christmas holidays, and have a large house party staying there with them.

Mr and Mrs Cranstoun Wigley (Christchurch) are staying in Wellington with Mrs Rhodes, at ‘The Grange.’

Mrs A. Farmar (Blenheim) was in Pieton last week visiting Mrs Scott.

Mrs Philson, of Hastings, has been paying a visit to Napier.

Mr and Mrs Biss (Wellington) have taken a house at Worser Bay for the Christmas holidays, and will be there for some weeks with their family.

Mrs Alec. Crawford, of ‘Miramar,’ Wellington, is spending some weeks with her relatives at Bulls.

Mrs Carlile, of Napier, after nearly a year’s absence in England, has returned to Napier, and travelled from Sydney by the s.s. Mokoia.

Mr and Mrs H. D. Bell (Wellington) are spending the Christmas holidays with their family, at their pretty residence at Lowry Bay.

Mrs Moore, of the Barrack Hill. Napier, is paying a visit to Mrs Charles Canning, of Petane.

Miss Spencer, of Napier, is visiting friends in the country.

Dr. and Mrs Moore, of Napier, have been spending Christmas in Wellington.

Mr Duthie, M.H.R., for Wellington has been visiting Napier.

Mrs P. McLean, of Napier, has gone for a visit, to Kumeroa and the. Hot Lakes.

Mr Howard Greensill (Picton) met with an accident on Sunday evening riding in from Mount Pleasant. His horse became unmanageable, and collided with a telegraph pole. Mr Greensill’s head struck the pole and he fell off his horse unconscious. He was carried into the Clarendon Hotel and attended to by Dr. Owen. He was taken home later in the evening and is doing well.

Mrs Alfred Brandon (Wellington) and her family are spending Christmas at Pahautanui, and will remain there several weeks.

Mr and Mrs Birch, of Hawke’s Bay, have returned to New Zealand, after a visit to England, and are spending Christmas in Wellington.

Mrs and Miss Donnelly and Miss Shaw, of Napier, have gone to Sydney for a visit of a few months.

Mr C. H. Mills. M.H.R., was in Picton last Friday, on his way to visit several friends in the Pelorus Sound.

Mr and Mrs Arthur Russell, of Te Matai, Palmerston North, with their children, are spending Christmas in Wellington with Mrs Russell’s parents, Mr and Mrs T. C. Williams, in Hobsonstreet.

Mr Wright, M.H.R., for Ashburton, and the Misses Wright have been visiting Rotorua and Napier.

Dr. and Mrs Newman (Wellington) are the guests of Mr Agim Birch, at ‘Erewhou,’ Hawke’s Bay.

Mrs Tosswill (Pahiatua) is visiting Mrs Masefield at ‘Manaroa,’ Pelorus Sound.

Miss H. Beauchamp, ‘Anikiwa,’ Picton, has gone to spend a few days with Mrs Chaytor. at ‘Marshlands,’ Spring Creek, and Miss Laura Beauchamp has gone to visit friends in Blenheim.

Dr. Kenny, at present in charge of the Hamilton Hospital, is to succeed the late Dr. Ginders as Resident Medical Officer at Government Sanatorium at Rotorua.

Sinee his return to New Zealand the Rev. T. H. Sprott has received the news of the death of his aged mother in England.

Mrs Allen, of Dunedin, who has been visiting Mr and Mrs McCormick, at Watamonga. Pieton, returned home on Friday by the Rotorua.

Mr Murray, late head teacher of Hamilton West School, was presented with a handsome set of carvers by the teaehers and children prior to his depart tire.

Miss Gibson (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs A. Pearce at Lowry Bay.

Wild cherries are very plentiful in most of the bays of Queen Charlotte Sound. Cherry picnics will be all the rage in Picton about New Year’s Day.

Mrs M. Studholme and Mrs Francis (Waimate) have been in Christchurch the last week visiting Mrs Boyle.

Mrs H. Rose, Christchurch, paid a short visit to her old home, Dunedin, last week.

Robert Wallath, a youth who some years ago amused himself in alarming the community of Taranaki by appearing as a mysterious highwayman, has after many years’ imprisonment been released, and is now in New Plymouth.

The Anglican Bishop of Wellington, accompanied by Mrs Wallis, made a short stay in New Plymouth on their way back from Auckland to Wellington.

Mr and Mrs A. Otterson are baek once more from England, and at present staying at ‘The Residence,’ Ar-magh-street.

Mr Purdie, the new head master for the Hamilton West School, arrived on Friday-, accompanied by Mrs Purdie.

Mr P. Roe, of Auckland, succeeds Mr MeGill (who has been transferred to Wellington) as clerk in the Police Department at New Plymouth.

Sir Robert Stout and Mr Theo. Cooper, of Auckland, have been on a visit to New Plymouth, both appearing in a case heard in the district Court.

Miss Nunneley, who is on her way to Dunedin, to play' in the Tennis Tournament, is the guest of Mrs Gore in Wellington. Miss O. Gore is also going to Dunedin to play' tennis.

Miss Alma Clark, of Christchurch, leaves by the Ruahine for England on a lengthened visit to her sister. Mrs Weston, whose husband has lately' been appointed to the command of one of the New Zealand Shipping Co.’s new steamers.

Mr H. P. Hornibrooke was entertained at a complimentary banquet in Coromandel prior to his departure for Abyssinia. The Hon. A. J. Cadman also partook of the banquet.

Mr Carroll after visiting Auckland left for Gisborne on Fridav.

Amongst those who took part in the performance of ‘The Messiah’ recently, nt St. Paul’s Church, Napier, there were some well-known Hastings' amateurs.
