BLENHEIM.

Dear Bee. November Ist. Though it seems to be late in the season for dancing, it has been decided to give a LARGE BALL at the time of the Agricultural Show. The Show will take place on November 23rd, and the ball the previous evening, so as not to conflict with the customary dinner given on the night of the ' show. A meeting of ladies interested in getting up the ball met at Mrs Anderson's on Friday evening, and a committee was formed and a secretary (Mr G. Stubbs) elected. It was at first intended to hold the ball at nice time, on November Ist, but the hall was engaged by the Operatic Society, which intend to give a reproduction ot ‘Les Cloches <le Corneville' in aid of the local hospital. The cast of characters will be the same as when it was performed a short time ago, and several practices have already taken place. The Bowling Green should have been opened last Wednesday, but the rain, which continued all day. caused a postponement until Friday, and that day was. until about 3 o'clock, equally unfit for any out door function, so the ceremony was again postponed until Wednesday.

The late afternoon of Friday was bright and sunny, so a good many visitors arrived at ‘The Barton,' as it was Mrs Griffiths' at home day. Among these were: Mrs Black, Mrs Paul Douslin. Mrs Septimus Eyes (Pieton). Mrs A. Farmar. Mrs R. Scott. Mrs Carey. Miss Fisher (Birch Hill). Miss E. Carey. Miss B. Farmar. etc. The weather of the week just past has been very variable, and it was thought that the prolonged thunderstorm on Saturday afternoon would be the prelude to a more pleasant state of things. This hope has not been realised, and showers and

signals of wind alternate with short periods of bright sunshine, and cause much anxiety as to the prospects for to-morrow, the great pienic •lay for children in these parts, and anniversay day. which is kept as a general holiday. A large number of Sunday school children will travel by train to Para and picnic there. The steamer Opawa will run an excursion trip to the Wairau Bar and Port Underwood to-morrow, and the spring meeting of the Marlborough Racing Club begins on the same day. Everybody is sorry to hear of Mr Rees' relapse. He has been an invalid for some time, but is now so ill that he has been removed to the Hospital to undergo an operation, and is in a very precarious state.
