OBITUARY.
The sudden death of Mr David Lundon. at one time Collector of Customs at Auckland and at Wanganui, is a matter for regret to his many friends. The death took place at bio residence. Claybrooke Road, Parnell, at the age of 72. Mr London became seriously ill while taking his cold bath in the morning, and passed away despite Dr. MeKellar’s attention about three o'clock in the afternoon. The deceased arrived in Auckland in 1842. after various experiences in Victoria and elsewhere, lie became tide-waiter in Auckland: later on Collector of Customs. Mr London was a widower, and leaves four sons, one of whom is in Perth. Western Australia, and one is Mr John London, of Ponsonby, also two unmarried daughters. A requiem mass was said in St. John the Baptist's Church, Parnell, early on the morning of the funeral, and in the afternoon a large number of friends and acquaintances followed the body to his last last resting place in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Syinondsstreet.
Mr William Hellier, an old settler iu Taranaki, died at Lepperton on October 28. at the age of 71 years. The deceased came to New Plymouth in the ship Oriental, which arrived on November 18th. 1841, and has resided iu the district ever since. All through the native rebellion he took an active part, whilst as a pioneer settler he had the grit in him to make for his family a comfortable home. His wife died about 3 years since, and he leaves two sons and two daughters to mourn their loss.
The sudden death of Mr H. J. Fisher, of Bell Block, Taranaki, on November 2nd, was an unexpected event. Mr Fisher went out after breakfast on the morning of his death to look over his farm, and not returning to lunch, search was made for him, when his body was found in one of the paddocks. A post mortem examination showed that death resulted from heart disease. Mr Fisher was born in Calcutta. and was 65 y’ears of age. He leaves a daughter to mourn his loss.
Much regret was felt throughout Hawke's Bay at the death of Mrs H. O. Caulton. of Hastings, which took place on Thursday, October 27th. Mrs Caulton had for some time been in bad health, but at the last her end came somewhat suddenly. The funeral was held on Sunday, October 30th. and was attended by a large number of friends and relatives. A beautiful kiwi mat, presented by Mr and Mrs Taiaroa to the late Mrs Caulton’s relations, covered the coffin; there were a great many most lovely wreaths, and a carriage filled with flowers headed the procession. The funeral service was conducted by Mr Hobbs.
News of the death of Mr James Wren Carlile, of the firm of Carlile and McLean, well known solicitors in Napier. was received there with great surprise and regret. A few months since Mr and Mrs Carlile left Napier for a visit to England.and the former seemed to derive benefit from the change, but recently he must have grown rapidly worse, and his death took place at Genoa on October 20th. Mr Carlile had resided and practised his profession in Napier for many years, and his loss will be felt by a large circle of friends, both here and throughout Hawke's Bay. On the day that the cablegram announcing his death was received in Napier all the lawyers' offices, as a mark of respect to the deeestsed. were closed, and at a meeting of the Council of the Hawke's Hay Law Society it motion of condolence with Mrs Carlile was passed, and it was resolved that the same should be notified to her. A resolution was also carried expressing regret at the loss sustained by the Law Society of such a distinguished member as Mr Carlile.
Mr Alfred Buckland, Jun., died at his residence, ‘Paeroa.’ Epsom, Auckland, on Thursday afternoon last. He was buried at St. Andrew's Cemetery on Sunday, and the funeral was largely attended.
