FANCY DRESS BALL AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

Great excitement prevailed in society circles on Thursday evening, owing to the grand ball at Government House given by His Excellency the Governor and the Countess of Ranfurly. Fancy costume was strictly ordered, consequently the effect of the quaint dresses and original styles was not marred by plain evening toilettes. No {tains had been spared over the decorations, which were most elaborate and beautiful. The ballroom was tastefully arranged with arum lilies and lyco{todiums and other greenery. The verandah, closed in with flags mostly from H.M.s. Tauranga, and carpeted with red, was furnished with easy chairs and pot plants. The conservatory was dimly lighted, and displayed beautiful flowering pot plants, etc.

The staircase was also decorated with greenery. In the upstairs corridor were large tubs of yellow broom, lounges, small tables, photos, and pictures. Downstairs the corridor held large pots, bamboo, and palms. Refreshments were served during the evening in the billiard room, where the table decorations were chiefly arum lilies. A splendid champagne supper was laid out in the dining room and two marquees adjoining. The floral decorations on the tables were arums and ixias in silver bowls.
