BOWLING.

AUCKLAND BOWLING CLUB. Delightful weather favoured the opening of the Auckland Bowling Club on Saturday last. The Grafton Road green looked its best, and, what with a large concourse of spectators, a liberal display of bunting, and music, the occasion was a very gay one. The president (Mr Thomson) in declaring the green open for play, expressed the pleasure he felt at meeting the members of the club once more. Last year they had a new pavilion to grace the opening. This year they met under a new flag, which he asked all present to salute with three cheers. Mr Thomson then went on to say how much praise was due to the ground superintendent, Mr Hancock, and the Green Committee for the admirable condition of the turf. He also referred to the fact that for the first time since the green was established all the ground was in use. The Ladies’ Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club had leased the ground not occupied by the bowlers, and greatly increased its beauty. Three cheers were asked for the ladies, and a hearty response was given. The president then expressed a hope that the Auckland Club would make a. gallant effort, to win back from Remuera the pennant flag given by the Bowling Association. Other rewards were also to be had, two of the members of the club having offered prizes for challenge fours matches. Cheers were given for the generous donors, and Mr Thomson concluded his remarks by hoping that Auckland bowlers would afford visitors from the South who might be in Auckland during the Exhibition, every opportunity to play on. the local greens. Jack having been thrown across the green as a signal that it was open for play, a match —president v. vice-president—eventuated in a win for the latter by nine points. There was no play on the above green on Saturday last, owing to a large number of the members having accepted an invitation to play on Mr Kirker’s private green, in Wallacestreet, and also to the fact that some dozen players were present at the opening of the Auckland and Devonport bowling greens. The bowling green at Patea was opened for the season on October 21. Three teams went from New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Hawera were also represented.
