In ancient Greece, a law provided that if a man divorced his wife he could not subsequently marry a woman younger than his discarded partner.
In his work ‘Talks with Mr Gladstone’ Mr Tollemache throws a sidelight on Mr Gladstone’s attitude to journalism: ‘He regarded the reputed editor of the “Spectator" as being, at least since Matthew Arnold, the first of our critics. Since his own policy had l»een each week attacked in the “Spectator” he had left off taking it in. He said that this was due to his great regard for the editor, “I found that reading those weekly attacks tended, to use a vulgar phrase, to establish a raw." ’
