HOCKEY.
On Saturday afternoon there was a very satisfactory muster of hockeyplayers, and a well contested, fast practice match took place between the representative team and a team of allcomers, the former winning easily. The Canterbury team arrived by the Rotomahana on’ Sunday, being welcomed on the wharf by members of the local team, who took the visitors for a drive round the outskirts of the city- during the afternoon. The Canterbury team is a very strong one, especially forward, and includes some of the best players in the South Island. The following are the names of the players: —Canterbury: Ford, goal; backs, Farnham and Burley; halfbacks, Hellyer, Pavitt (captain) and Goodman; forwards. Oram, Rankin, Mellichamp, Sibbald, and Hudson. Wellington team: Pearce, goal; baeks, Pearson and A. Wylie; half-backs, Fitzherbert, Dibley, and Jackson; forwards, Gilmer, E. Wylie, Wilson (captain), Hickson, and Organ. On Monday the visiting team were entertained at luncheon at the ‘Trocadero’ by the Wellington Club, and then both teams drove out to the Athletic Park, where the match took place at halfpast 2 o’clock. There was not a verylarge attendance of the public, owing no doubt to their being unable to leave business; but there was a good muster of the local hockey- players, who took a very- keen interest in the match. In view of its very recent formation, the Wellington team did verywell against the strong team pitted against them, but they were quite outclassed, and the visiting team won the match, after a very good game, by two goals to none.
