The Bishop of Waiapu, has been visiting- Ormoudville and Danevirke, and has held Confirmations there.

Among tlie passengers by the lonic from England, which arrived in Wellington on Wednesday last, were the Hon. Air and Mrs Buller (Wellington) and their little daughter, who have been spending some months in England.

Mrs Moore, of Tennyson-street, has returned to Napier after a short visit to Gisborne.

Mr and Mrs Close, of Napier, who have for some time been staying in the Hot Lakes district, have now returned home. They have been away for several months, and Mr Close, who has benefited by the change, is much better in health.

Miss Wilkins, of Auckland, is staying with Mrs Fenwick at the Bank of New Zealand, Napier.

The second of Miss Hardy Johnston’s (Wellington) delightful assemblies takes place this evening (Thursday) at the Sydney-street schoolroom.

Mr and Mrs W. Limbrick, who have been for a trip to England, have returned home to Napier.

Mr J. Drummond, of Hawke’s Bay, Stock Inspector, has been moved to Wellington, and Mr W. Millar, of Masterton, is to take his place. Mrs Sainsbury, of the Barrack Hill, Napier, has been visiting the Hot Lakes.

The Rev. Edwin Allanson is holding mission services in Hawke’s Bay and has been giving able addresses at the Spit Church and at the Napier Cathedral, and theta.ee goes to some of the surrounding districts.

His Excellency the Governor is to open the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in Wellington on Saturday afternoon.

Lieutenant-Colonel Newall has been visiting Napier and inspecting the volunteers.

Miss Clarke, who has been staying with the Misses Bull, in Blenheim, took her departure for Auckland last Wednesday.

A demonstration by the Liberal party is to be held at the Opera House, Wellington, on Saturday evening, and during the evening Mr and Mrs Seddon are to have a presentation made to them.

Mrs O’Neal, of Wairoa. is the guest of Mrs Davidson, of the Bluff Hill, Napier.

Bishop Julius, with his daughter, Miss Ethel Julius, has gone to the West Coast, and Mrs Julius is going to pay a short visit to New Brighton.

Mr G. Cooper is leaving Hawke’s Bay and is going to live in Palmerston.

Last week Mr and Mrs A. P. Green, of Blenheim, were the guests of Mr and Mrs Vavasour, at Ugbrooke.

Mrs Reynolds, of Dunedin, who is with her husband in Wellington, is laid up with an injured ankle.

Mr T. Harrington Smith has been appointed Assistant. Secretary of the Harbour Board in Wellington, ami takes up his duties early in August.

Miss Al. Balfour, of Napier, is on a visit to friends in the South.

Miss Ethel Carey, of Blenheim, is spending a few days in Picton with her aunt, Mrs A. G. Fell.

Mr James Seddon. the brother ot the Premier of New Zealand, has recently died of bronchitis at St. Helens. Lancashire, England.

Miss Edson, of Auckland, is having a thoroughly good time in London.

Mr Le Seur returned to Waikato last week after three years’ absence in the Old Country.

Mr H. Kingsley, the well-known Wanganui pole-vaulter, has been seriously ill since last January but is now recovering.

Mr and Mrs Murchison, of Lake Coleridge, have taken a house in Peterborough-Street West, Christchurch. For the sake of their children's education they intend staying in Christchurch for a year ,or two. Mrs English, of Timaru, is at present staying with Mrs Fergus, of Dunedin. Miss Kennedy, of Napier, has gone to stay with her brother, Mr F. Kennedy, at Gisborne, for a few weeks. Miss Garcia, of Christchurch, is visiting friends in the Empire city. The Misses Julius, of Christchurch, are to stay with Mrs Wallis, at Bishopscourt, Wellington, after their stay with Lady Ranfurly at Government House. Mrs Ashcroft, of Wellington, has been visiting- Napier.

Captain Grant has been given the command of the Takapuna in place of that of the Rotoiti, which he held while Captain Robertson takes charge of the Rotoiti.

Mrs Charles Watts is visiting Blenheim and has been staying with Mrs Cleghorn, but is now the guest of Mrs G. Robinson.

Mrs Orr has returned to Blenheim from the Wairau Valley, where she was staying with Mrs J. Bell, at Hillersden.

Mrs Bull, of Blenheim, has gone to make a lengthy visit to her mother, Mrs Tunks, Tauranga.

Miss Katie O'Neill has returned to Hamilton after several months in Auckland.

The young Earl and Countess of Sea.field are passengers to London from Sydney by the Victoria.

The Misses Fell, of Pieton, are spending a few days in Blenheim, where they are staying with Mrs Griffiths.

Mr John Murrell, the Wellington manager of the Huddart-Parker Co., was a passenger by the Monowai for Sydney last week. Mr Murrell will take advantage of a. well-earned holiday to visit Melbourne and Hobart, as well as Sydney.

Professor and Mrs Clark passed through Wellington on their way to Christchurch, after having enjoyed their honeymoon in the Hawke's Bay district.

Mr A. B. Donald and Mr George Dennett returned to Auckland by the Hauroto from the Eastern Pacific last Friday.

Mr E. S. Rutherford, Picton, drove Captain Browne, of H.M.s. Tauranga, to Blenheim on Monday last. The doctor and first lieutenant were also of the party.

Mr Mackay, the Government Mining Expert, who has been making a visit, to Rotorua, is now again in Auckland.

Misses Fell (2) and Miss Seymour, Picton, have l»een in Blenheim for a few days this week. They went up for Miss W addy’s dance.

The Bishop of Nelson is visiting his Marlborough portion of his diocese just now. He was staying at the Vicarage in Picton last week.

Mr Samuel Vaile, of Auckland, is in Wellington, waiting upon the Parliamentary Committee which has charge of the railway question.

Mr W. Bond, of the Pelorus Sound, was in Blenheim last week.

Miss Stace, Robin Hood’s Bay, Is spending a few days with Mrs Griffiths, in Blenheim.

Mr T. Harrington-Smith will, in the beginning of next month, commence his duties as Assistant-Secretary to the Wellington Harbour Board.

Among the passengers from Auckland for Sydney by the Mararoa on Monday last were the Rev. G. Williams, of the Congregational Church, Devonport. who has been appointed to the Church at Mildura; Mr J. C. Greer, of the Cassel Gold Extracting Company, who is returning to the Old Country; and Mr and Mrs J. L. Young, of Tahiti.

A farewell social was given in the Choral Hall. Auckland, to Mr W. P. Gaudin, of that city, on Monday last by the members of the Grafton ‘At Home,’ the occasion being Mr Gaudin’s departure from the Northern city to join the literary staff of the ‘Poverty Bay Herald.’ Upwards of 500 guests were present, and dancing, interspersed with songs contributed by the guests, was kept up till an early hour next morning. Mr George Watts, on behalf of Mr Gaudin’s numerous friends, presented the latter gentleman with a handsomle illuminated testimonial.

Mr Harry Fookes, of New Plymouth, has gone to Nelson, where he is to be married. Mrs Fookes and the two Miss Fookes went with him.

Miss Robinson, who has been visiting Mrs Sedgwick in Picton for a few months, returned to Takaka, Nelson, last Wednesday.

Dr. Baker, of Tauranga, is to fill Dr. Binder’s place, at Rotorua while the latter gentleman is away in Auckland on account of his health.

Mrs G. Gould and Mrs Lascelles, of Christchurch, had a most enjoyable trip to Australia.. The latter is now paying- a short, visit to her mother, Airs Robison, before returning to her home at Lake Heron.

Miss Little, of Feilding, is staying with Mrs Standish, of New Plymouth.

Mr H. C. Seymour and Captain Harris returned to Picton from an enjoyable trip about the Pelorus Sound. They visited Air and Airs Masefield, at Alanaroa, and many other old residents. Air Seymour’s health has much improved by his trip. He returned to Tyntesfield on Tuesday.

The Rangitikei Racing Club is to present Air John Stevens, M.H.R., with a pair of field-glasses in token ot its appreciation of his services as judge.

Air W. Wilson, of Hokitika, who is engaged in the survey of the Starborough Estate, was in Blenheim at the end of last week and attended Aliss Waddv’s dance.

Miss Wylde-Browne (Auckland) is on a visit to Airs O’Neill, Claudelands, Hamilton.

Aliss George, of Auckland, is staying in Wellington, and is the guest of Miss Coates.

Lord and Lady Ranfurly have given several luncheons ami dinners during the week. On Wednesday last the. following guests had the honour of invitations: The Bishop of Wellington and Airs Wallis, Aliss Jervis (England), Miss Richmond, Sir Walter and Aliss Buller, Hon. C. Bowen, and Air Edward Fitz Gerald.

Airs Arthur Russell (The Matai, Palmerston North) is staying with her parents, Air and Airs T. C. Williams, in Wellington, for the. session.

H.AI.s. Tauranga arrived in Wellington on Wednesday afternoon from Pieton, coming through the French Pass and Tory Channel, being the first cruiser that has ever accomplished this feat, which was rather a risky one, owing to the warship’s large tonnage. The Tauranga expects to remain in Wellington until Wednesday next, upon which date she proceeds to Lyttelton.

Among the passengers by the lonic from England this week was a little hedgehog, consigned to Air Tarr, of Wellington. The new immigrant attracted considerable interest when it landed on the wharf, and appeared in excellent health.

Miss Pole, who has been visiting her aunt Airs Stewart, of Home Bay.Ponsonby, Auckland, returned to her home in Sydney on Monday.

Captain Roehfort Snow, of the ‘New Zealand Mounted Rifle Regiment, was presented to the Prince of Wales by the Adjutant-General at the Levee at St. James’ Palace last Monday.

Airs T. C. Williams (Wellington) has issued invitations for an ‘At Home’ at her residence in Hobson-street, on the 10th of August, from 8.30 till 12.

Air Harold Beauchamp, of Wellington, has just returned after a pleaant. and satisfactory business trip to Hamburg and Amsterdam; with the the beauties of the latter town, especially the picture gallery, he was much impressed.

All- and Airs Heaton Rhodes are spending a few days with Airs Rhodes, at the Grange. Wellington, on their return to Christchurch from Auckland.
