CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, June 29. What a dreadfully unhappy frame of mind one does get into when one’s friends leave you and you expect in about eighteen hours to hear they have arrived safely at the next port, and yet during ail the next twentyfour hours they have not been seen or heard of. The Rotomahana gave a good many people a bad time last Friday and Saturday, and I do not know which was the most to be pitied —those who suffered the agonies of mal-de-mer or those suffered mentally, for it is small comfort to be told ‘Oh, she has put out to sea’ until‘she’comes back again and you know for a fact she did go out to sea. One or two very, nice AFTERNOON TEAS have taken place this week, that of Mrs Henry Wood, Avonside, on Wednesday, bringing a lot of friends together. Among those present were Mrs Walcot Wood, Mrs J. H. N. Burnes, Mrs (Dr.) Jennings, Mrs de Vries, Mrs Tonks, Mrs V. Hargreaves, Mrs R. D. Thomas, Mrs F. Graham, Mrs Macfarlane (Lyndon), Misses Cunningham and Newton. On Thursday, Mrs Jennings, Glou-cester-street W., gave a very pleasant afternoon tea, which was served in the dining-room. Among her guests were Mrs J. H. N. Burnes, Mrs H. Rose, Mrs Bruges, Airs R. D. Thomas, Mrs G. Bennett, Mrs V. Hargreaves, Mrs and Miss Graham, Mrs H. Wood, Misses Cunningham, Kinsey, Martin, Newton, Fulton (2) and Niven (Oamaru). The time was pleasantly' interspersed with music and the short afternoon was very quickly gone. Mrs J. C. Palmer, Hereford-street E., had a small gathering of friends for afternoon tea on Thursday, amongst whom were Mrs J. D. Hall, Mrs W. B. Cowlishaw. Mrs Fox. the Misses Reeves, Murray-Aynsley, Nedwill. Beswick, Ronalds, etc. Mrs James Henderson, Armaghstreet W., gave two EUCHRE PARTIES last week, the first more especially' for her own friends, and the second for the. younger members of the family. Among those present on both evenings were Mr and Mrs V. Hargreaves, Mr and Mrs 8. Gordon, Mr and Mrs H. Wood, Mr and Mrs G. Bennett, Mr and Mrs Graham, Mr F. and Miss Graham, Mr G. and Miss Cunningham, one or two officers of the Torch, Mr Atkinson, Miss Russell, and several more.

On Wednesday the Committee of the Canterbury Club entertained the officers of the Taurangn and Torch at a

DINNER. when a most enjoyable evening was spent by all.

The meet of the hounds on Tuesday last was at Mr Buckley’s, Dunsandel, a beautiful day and the locality producing a very large muster of followers. The unhappy accident to Mr H. Cotterill very much marred the day’s sport, though I am glad to say he is not so seriously hurt as at first thought, but will not be able to ride for some time. Mr and Mrs Buckley kindly entertained the FIELD AT LUNCHEON, and amongst the followers were Mrs Buckley, Mrs Woodhouse, Misses Anson, Westeura (2), Furze, Todd, Messrs G. and W. Buckley, Westeura, Wright, Lili, Furze, Hamer, Dalgety, Palairet, Bassett, etc. Miss Cox’s Cinderella Dance on Saturday evening at the Art Gallery was not as well attended as many have been, partly owing to the very wet weather and partly that it was Saturday night. The next is to take place on" Wednesday, the 13th of next month. Mrs Henderson, the Misses Henderson, Garcia, Lean, Gresson. Gibson, Meares were among those present.

DOLLY VALE.
