NELSON.
Dear Bek, August 11. When in town lately I noticed some SMART GOWNS -worn by some of my lady friends and acquaintances. Mrs Bums wears an effective costume of deep prune cashmere, the bodice made with long basque and finished with cream lace, high ■ crowned black velvet hat trimmed with black feathers and red roses, handsome fur boa; Mrs Roger Kingdon, black serge mourning costume, hat to match ; Mrs (Dr.) Roberts, black skirt, green velvet cloak, large hat with bright green ribbons ; Miss Gribben, black serge coat and skirt, stylish black hat with violets and green ribbon bows ; Miss Curtis, mixed tweed costume, brown sailor hat to match ; Miss Ledger, smart coat and skirt of black cloth, electric blue waistcoat, hat en suite ; Miss Ethel Mackay, brown tweed costume, large felt hat to match ; Miss Jones, black finished with heliotrope, large black velvethat with violets round the brim; MissG. Jones, green tweed, brown jacket, hat to match trimmed with green and brown; Miss Richmond black and
red mixed tweed, fur boa, black silk beaver hat trimmed with white ribbons and red rosea; Mias Pitt, heather tweed tailormade costume, small toque to match ; Miss Sealy, black aerge akirt, brown jacket and boa. black felt Alpine hat; Mias WebbBowen, fawn tailor-made coat and akirt, black sailor bat; Miss Heaps, black serge coat and skirt, black and white blouse, sailor hat: Miss A. Bell, dark skirt, bright green cape, black hat with feathers and cream roses. On Saturday the Girls’ College Field Club went for a PICNIC to the Cable Bay bush. The day was beautifully fine, so all spent a most enjoyable time. Several of the members, with Miss Gibson, rode out on their bicycles: the rest of the party drove in a brake. Some who were present were the Misses Gibson, Holloway, Blackett, Hallett, Hoalker, L. Hunter-Brown, Kempthorne, etc. On Monday evening the Mayor (Mr F. Trask) and Mrs Trask ENTERTAINED Captain Allsopp, of the barque * Brussels,* Captain Evans, of the barque * Belle of Arvon,’ and a few other friends at their residence, 'Gunnersbury House.’ A delicious repast was servedin the dining room, the table being abundantly and daintily
spread. The evening wee spent with cards and music, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Among the visitors were the Very Rev. Father Mahoney, Dr. Roberts, Messrs C. A. Harley, Maginnity, H. Baigent, Wagstall (of the Canterbury Timet}, Mr Nevanas, and others. There is at last some hopes of Nelson people soon being able to boast of a Town Hau, the want of which has long been felt, but it is only quite lately that the public has been able to arouse itself to sufficient energy to work for one in real earnest. Now the City Council have gone so far ae to advertise for competitive designs for a Town Hall and Municipal Offices, so we live in hopes of shortly seeing a really handsome building in our city.
Phyllis.
