RAISING THE FLAG.
"I 1 "TE give two illustrations of au event of some inV V terest that took place at Kaukapakapa on the 10th of July. A 42 feet high has been erected in the school ground and the ceremony of raising the flag took place on Saturday. The flag is the blue ensign of New Zealand, on which is wrought the ‘Union Jack ’ and the stars of the ‘ Southern Cross.’ More interest and excitement was manifested over the event than the promoters ever dreamed of. It was a glorious day, and men and women, lads and lasses, all in holidav
attire, came from all quarters of the district to witness the ceremony. Punctually at 2 o’clock Mr Monk, M H.R., addressed the people gathered round the flags'aff, and impressed upon their minds the duty of loyalty and patriotism. Speaking to the school children present he specially charged them to consider carefully the importance of the cere mony they were about to witness. Four little girls raised the flag, one for England, one for Ireland,
one for Scotland, and one for the Colonies, and with a will they pulled together, and as the flag of their native land blew out on the freshening breeze there was a great cheering and waving of hats. The greatest enthusiasm prevailed, and cheer after cheer greeted the flag, while the gale unfurling it set forth its dignity and beauty. The first illustration represents the raisers of the flag. Misses Laulie Dye, Dina Naughton, Agnes Shanks, and Jean Goodwin, all schoolmates and natives of Kaukapakapa, representing the countries which their parents once called Aome. The photographs are by Mr Taylor, of Helensville.
