CHIROMANCY,

SCIENCE OF READING HANDS.

TERE has been so much interest taken in the Graphology Column, that it has been decided to start a ‘Chiromancy’ Column, under the able guidance of Madame Vero. This lady has devoted a

subject, and has thoroughly studied it in all its branches. Her ‘readings’ have been extraordinarily successful, and The Graphic is fortunate in securing her services A sketch of a hand with all its lines is given, as a guide to those wishing their hands to be read. No one has all the lines indicated on the specimen hand, but some few of them will be found on each hand. The following suggestions will help in drawing the hand: — Lay your hand, palm downwards, on a piece of clean white paper, the fingers as far apart as they will comfortably go. Then with a pencil trace all round it. Next hold it up against the window, and reverse it so that it will appear with the palm uppermost, as in the sketch. Then ink it carefully all round, taking pains to have the fingers the exact length. In the first sketch indicate the joints as you come to them by dots ; this makes it much easier to get the correct distances when filling in the lines. Draw all the lines you see, as far as possible at correct distances from each other. Put no names in. Then send your hand with two shillings in stamps, to

‘ Madame Vero, care of the Lady Editor, New Zealand Graphic, Auckland.’ • Kiwi.’—The mounts or spaces in your hand appear to be evenly developed. If any, Mars is the predominant. This mount or space is unlined and broad, therefore you should be courageous, and yet calm, in danger, with an abundance of fortitude and presence of mind. The fingers are short—you decide quickly, and the wide spaces between the first and second, and third and fourth indicate not only independence in opinion and action, but much originality. The thumb exhibits a most resolute will, which is likely tb yield to no forcible arguments, although it may not be proof against loving persuasion. The first finger also shows that you like to rnle, and prefer to be second to none The Life Line, coming far out into the hand, promises length of days, but the fork at the termination is considered to be a warning against too much brain work, especially if it be visible in both hands. I think from your diagram that this line rises on the mount of Jupiter. This shows ambition and lofty aspirations. As there are no cross lines on the mount, there is every hope that your desires will be gratified. The Heart Line shows strong affection, but only for a few, and there is a very severe heart trouble marked early in life, caused by no Gult that I can detect, while of its severity I have no

doubt. There is also a strong influence indicated, which in some respects is life long. There is only one deep attachment line, which commences quite in youth, and the marriage is distinctly marked (according to my best authority) at 28, or very near that age. You are the survivor, but I see no indication of a second marriage in this hand. The Head Line shows an excellent memory and much imagination. Your business capacities are good, and there is money to be made by means of them. The Fate Line rises well, .but .there is some shock, or great error in judgment, between 30 and 35, which for a time is a bar to success, as it paralyses effort. An illness connected with the head would have the same effect, but I must repeat my reminder that if the right hand be different this is only threatened, and in no case is anything irrevocable; the lines are warnings. Ido not see any sign of artistic success, although the line of Apollo is very satisfactory for a time, but it stops short in middle life, when you appear to change the direction of your efforts. The triangle bespeaks good abilities, health and character.—Vero.

‘ Tourist. ’ —l am very doubtful which are the dominant mounts in your hand. I think I may pronounce you to be a subject of Mars, ».e., courageous, calm in danger, impetuous at other times, bnt strong in resistance and resolution, while fidelity in love and friendship is one of your strongest characteristics. Your movements are quick, and although yonr affections are not fickle, you are fond of change of scene and travelling, especially by water, as the development of the mount of Luna, or percussion of the hand, tells me that the sea possesses great attractions for you. Your disposition, too, is very affectionate, and although you have a love of rule, you do not hold the reins with rough or impatient hands. The thumb confirms these remarks, as the first phalange displays a strong and powerful will, the second indicates reason, good judgment, and the capability for keeping a secret. Glancing across to the little finger, I see that the prudence in decision is confirmed, while a love of industry is also perceptible. Thus the impetuosity of Mars is well regulated by discretion. The Life Line is not of great length in this hand, but you have given me no indications of illness before 45 ; then great care should be taken of the health, as a serious illness is indicated about 50. If the line be unbroken in the other hand the sign is only of an illness ; if it be broken, prudence and care may avert the danger, but a double break is a warning that both will be necessary. The Heart Line displays an abundance of steady and warm affection, but not a superfluity, and in your fortunate hand both friendship and love appear to bring happiness. Of friends you seem to possess many, but I can trace only one deep love. This attachment commences early in life, almost before 20; at all events you meet the object of it as young as that, and I think the marriage takes place while you are still under 30, but you have given me no marriage line. There is a change of residence or position about 25, and that may be marriage. There is another change less fortunate, between 38 and 40. In marriage you are the longer liver. The Head Line shows much ambition, which will probably be gratified, and acute business capacities. Jupiter’s mount is foatunate in every respect. Saturn is less favourable, but I think there are only trifling obstacles in your pathway, at least if your right hand shows the same indication. There is not much promise of artistic success, but again in your diagram I see the lines in the Mount of Mercury below the little finger, which signify medical ability and a love of chemistry. Three long voyages are marked, with numerous indications of increasing wealth and prosperity. If these signs are confirmed you must indeed be one of Fortune’s favourites.—VKßO.

‘Dolly Vardon.’ —One glance at yonr diagram is sufficient to show me that you are a subject of Venus, and that like ‘Tourist,’ you have a very fortunate hand. Your temperament is affectionate, benevolent and gay. You enjoy pleasure and desire to please and give satisfaction. Love and praise are as welcome to you as sunshine is to flowers. Bright colours please your eyes, and you delight in beauty, melody in music, dancing, and all the innocent amusements which belong to a nature alike loving, sensitive and happy. The shape of your fingers shows quick impressionability aud the most admirable tact. Thethumb isnot deficient in strength of will, but without that evidence I am certain that those slender fingers of yours display extraordinary power of subjugating others to your wishes. In other words you have a genius for getting your own way in the pleasantest manner. The Life Line is as good in your drawing as it is possible for that line to be, but the line running downwards from between the first and second fingers indicates some internal delicacy. Ido not think this affects you early in life. The Heart Line shows two troubles connected with the affections. For the first, circumstances alone were responsible. The second originates in pride in some way connected with money. And now there comes a puzzle ! You have given me only one strong attachment line, and that shows much interference from other people, yet two happy marriages are undoubtedly marked, one to a gentleman considerably older than yourself. I think there must be more horizontal lines below your little hnger on your right hand to explain the mystery. The line of Saturn or Fate is most propitious until after 50, when some trouble is shown, I think connected with the delicacy before mentioned. The line of Apollo is exceptionally good, and indicates not only artistic success, but riches and prosperity. Travelling is marked, but I do not see any actual voyage lines. The line of Health, the Head Line, the angles and quadrangle all confirm the other good and happy indications, and proclaim your intellect to be clear and intelligent, and your character winning and attractive, although the deeply joined lines of the life and head give proof of a deficiency of self-confidence. There are two, if not three changes of residence or position before 25. Probably one means a marriage, but there is no line to guide me as to the time of either of the two happy marriages.— Vkro.

* Bel : ever.’—After studying your diagrams carefully I have decided that the mounts of Jupiter and Apollo are

the most prominent in your hand, and you should be sunny and cheerful in temperament, courteous and affable in manner, tolerant of the faults of others, anxious to please and gain affection, yet sufficiently self-reliant and capable of influencing those around you. Your tastes are artistic and refined, but you combine the useful with the ornamental and like-occupation, truth in art and independence in action. The long and pointed little finger displays intelligence, eloquence, intuition, and confirms your influential power. The first finger indicates some ambition ; the second shows activity. The knot of order is well developed, and yonr artistic tendencies do not degenerate into aestheticism. You like neatness and method. If musical—ang I incline to think yon are a musician—you play with accuracy as well as taste and execution. The fingers shorter than the palm indicate impulse, and this is also displayed by the separation of the lines of the Head and Life. You make up your mind quickly and speak openly, and without waiting for much consideration. The thumb is strong enough to support the influence of the little finger, but it does not manifest a resolute will, although there are other signs which give proof of plenty of decision in your character. The Life Line is satisfactory in both hands until after 50, but I fear your health will not be good in the decline of years ; still, on examining the right hand carefully I see a square into which the line runs, and a square almost invariably signifies an escape from whatever danger is threatened. The Heart Line tells me that al though you can love well and truly, you receive more affection than you bestow. There is one rather severe heart trouble early in life. lam unable to discover the cause of it with certainty, but I think it was jealousy on the opposite side, and probably causeless. There is an attachment, happy and fortunate in every way, which commences on your side about 24, perhaps younger. I fancy the engagement is not a long one, but the line which indicates the date of marriage in some hands is indistinct. The Head Line is very good in both hands. It shows a sufficiency of sympathy and imagination, and supplies both firmness, energy, and intelligence. The Fate Line is fortunate after early youth, but in the right hand it appears tied down by the line of life at the commencement, which my authorities and experience tell me indicate that your youth was fettered by restrictions of some kind, but these disappear long before 20. Jupiter is a very fortunate mount, clear, excepting for signs of gratified wishes or ambitions. The one line upon the mount of Saturn is good, but I do not like the cross bars ; they foretell some bad luck caused by imprudence. I cannot tell at what time; it may be in the past. From the mount of Apollo’s marks I gather that you try too many different branches of art for great success in one line. I only see one long voyage marked, but there are some of shorter duration.—Vero.

‘J. Wiltshire’ (right hand). —I am, indeed, glad that you have sent me a diagram of your right hand, and that you were fairly satisfied with my remarks. lam happy to be able to tell you that this hand is much more fortunate than the left, and yon must bear in mind that while the left hand indicates what our lives may be, the right hand shows what we make them —at least that is the opinion of my best authority on the subject. In your right hand, of course, there are still the-same passionately strong affections, bnt the fork on the Mount of Jupiter is uncrossed, and so are the numerous branches of the Heart Line. The former indicates a subject capable of the highest type of love, pure, unselfish, and, being uncrossed, successful. The Head Line is excellent in this hand, showing good judgment, firmness, and memory ; but there is trouble, illness, and sorrow confirmed in childhood and early youth. The signs give me the idea of a loving, sensitive, and high-spirited boy, misunderstood, and suffering accordingly, and about 15 the death of a near relation is marked. Then wealth increases, or should increase, but there is difficulty and interference over it, so much so as to cause illness. In this hand the change is between 30 and 35, and it appears to be connected with marriage, but I cannot be certain, excepting that the change is favourable, as the line is uncrossed. In this hand the Fate Line starts from Luna, and is most promising, although it again stops at the Heart Line, confirming the wonderfully strong influence of the affections. It rises again and is crossed by two branches. There is undoubtedly trouble to be overcome, or it may have been already overcome, and I am of opinion that all will end happily and satisfactorily, although great effort on your part may be necessary. The actual good fortune or wealth comes apparently from an unexpected quarter. The Health Line is good, but two illnesses are marked, one certainly after 40. Ido not think either is of extreme severity, and the Life Line indicates great length of years, and not a lingering illness at the last. I see one line which I interpret to signify wealth either from or through marriage, but as this is only my own interpretation, you must take the information for what it is worth. There is only one really strong attachment line, and the marks which indicate the capabilities requisite for a clever doctor are unusually distinct, as are also those which display exceptionally good abilities. I feel certain that at some time in your life you suffer much from the undue interference of a member of the feminine sex, but as I am unable to give the date, it may be over. Her efforts are especially directed to affairs of the heart.—VKßO.
