OBITUARY.

IT is with deep regret we record the death of Mr Arthur Carkeek, at Blenheim, on May 24th. He was the eldest son of the late Mr Stephen Carkeek, many years ago of the Customs Department in Wellington. He married the second daughter of the late Dr. Muller, the R.M. for many years in Blenheim, whom he now leaves with a son and daughter, both grown up. The deceased gentleman served with distinction in the last Maori war, and received the New Zealand Cross for service in carrying important dispatches through the enemy's country, his perfect knowledge of the language rendering him particularly suitable for the dangerous mission, as well as his indomitable will and courage. He lived for a number of years near Otaki, and lat ly at Manukau, where Mrs Carkeek is at present.

Again th : s week (says our Christchurch correspondent) two much-loved and respected citizens have been taken from us, one in a painfully sudden way, Mrs R. C. Bishop, whose husband, sad to say, had only just gone to Australia for a short holiday. Mrs Bishop was about amongst her friends as usual the day previous, her sudden death being caused by syncope. Mrs Bishop, many will remember, took a prominent part at the late Industrial Exhibition, helping in every way she could, and later still at the Bowling Tournament held in Christchurch only a few months ago, when the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Bishop was extended to all comers at that meeting. Only the day before her death Mrs Bishop received a small souvenir in remembrance of that occasion, from the members. The other was that of Mrs Newton, of Northcote, Papanni, who had been ill for several months. She leaves a large family of daughters (six), two of whom are married—Mrs (Dr.) Cooke, of Lincoln, and Mrs D. Macfarlane.
