• There is one thing I wonder at and that is that the voice is so little cultivated for ordinary conversation,' says a lady. ‘ I am aware that we have professors of elocution, but what we need is sweetness and gentleness, and refinement of intonation, for every-day intercourse. The power of a really flexible voice in making home delightful is very great, but I rarely ever heard a child advised about the use of the organs of speech aliout the house. From fourteen to eighteen are voice-making veais. If the boy indulges then in harsh or sulky or mean tones, he will have such a voice all his life. A girl still more should be carefully advised to speak always in a refined and cultivated but not artificial manner.'
