PICTON.

Dear Bee, February 9. Our dissipations seem to come all of a heap, as it were, instead of spreading themselves out to last the week. Wednesday last was almost too exciting a day for anybody. First we started off at 10 a.m. FOR A CRUISE in the champion yachtWaitangi,’ the owners—Messrs Kirker, Georgieson, and Jamieson —having invited a party on board. It was a glorious day, and the yacht went like a bird. A landing was effected at Torea, and the party walked up the track to the top of Torea Neck, whence they had a lovely view of a part of the Keneperu Sound and The Portage. It was fortunate that we went there, as we found a young man patiently awaiting a chance of getting to Picton for medical advice, he having severely scalded his hand and arm. The yachtsmen, like good Samaritans, took him on board and dressed his wounds, and in due time conveyed him to town. After lunch we proceeded down the Sound nearly to Dieffenbach, saw some porpoises, and returned to Picton at 6 p.m. In addition to the owners there were on board Messrs Gannaway, Mackie, Dawson, Tucker, Levy, and Bissitt (pilot). The party who went from Picton were Mrs and Misses Allen (four), Mrs and Misses Seymour (two), Miss Greensill, Miss Watkins (Wanganui), and Mr Rutherford. The same day was Misses Greensill’s day ‘ AT HOME,* so that those who were afraid of sailing went there and spent as usual, a delightful afternoon. Among those present were Misses Seymour (two) Philpotts, Harris, Mrs J. Greensill, Miss L. Greensill, and Messrs Greensill (two), Riddell, etc. Miss Ethel Greensill acted as hostess in the absence of her sister, who was on the yacht. During the evening about 8 30, the firebells rang out, and everybody turned out to that and watched a—fortunately empty —old house, one of the relics of the old, old days, burn to the ground. The cleaners had been at work preparatory to the return of the owner, an old resident, to her home. Fortunately it was insured, and had been for over thirty years, so that the owner, a widow, will get sufficient to build herself a small cottage in place of it. On Friday the Misses (H.C.) Seymour gave AFTERNOON TEA to their girl friends at * Cam House.’ Among those present were Misses Greensill (two), Allen (three), Harris (two), Philpotts (two) Watkins, etc., etc. The girls

spent a very jolly afternoon.

Jean.
