CHRISTCHURCH.

Dear Bee, October 22. , — T he De Kontski concerts and political meetings-the latter scarcely coming under the head of social events—have really been the only amusements this week. We are. as usual, now waiting for carnival time. There are many rumours of * coming gaieties, so we have the beacon of * hope,' and as we are being favoured with a spell of very trying nor’-west winds, we are quite content to do nothing. On Saturday the ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING was held at Lincoln. A good many people went out from town, and were rewarded by seeing some very good events, and also by a very unpleasant wind which sprang up later in the day. The Mounted Rifles, which had been in camp for a week at Addington. held their sports in the afternoon, and in spite of the disagreeable day a number of spectators were present, Mrs Gordon presenting the prizes at the conclusion. Captain Snow was in charge and a good week s training was put. in. ' Mrs John Williams, ’ Llanmaes,’ Hereford-street West, gave a small JUVENILE DANCE for her young daughter on Saturday evening, which passed off most successfully. Some of those fortunate enough to be present were the Misses Williams Rolleston, Cook, etc., Masters Neave Weston. Harper, and others. ’ On Wednesday afternoon Miss Malet, Merivale, entertained some of her girl friends at AFTERNOON TEA, when a very enjoyable time was spent, though afternoon teas are now on the wane. Among her guests were the Misses Reeves. Cowlishaw, Ovenden, Ainger, Cox, etc. On Thursday afternoon Mrs Otterson had issued invitations for a small croquet party, but unfortunately was too ill to see her

Saeata. but lam glad to say she is out again. I hear Mr and Mrs Lteraon are contemplating a trip Home early in the new year. The Messrs Peter and Dereslev Wood have summonsed the attendance of their young friends to a dance at ‘ Beckenham House,* Papanui Road, on Thursday the 22nd. The invitations caused a good deal of amusement and a tremor of fear to the timid at the blue official-looking document announcing the summons. with the threat of a due for non-attendance. On Friday, the 23rd, a subscription dance is to be held at Papanui. the hostesses on this occasion being Mesdames Snow, D. Matson, and Hartland. These dances are very popular, and no doubt this will be as enjoyable as usual. On the different evenings of THE KONTSKI CONCERTS I noticed there Professor and Mrs Cook. Mrs Bowen and party. Mr and Mrs Wilding. Mr. Mrs, and the Misses Meares, Mr and Mrs Julius, Mr and Mrs Embling, Mrs Ogle, Mrs Burns. Mr and Mrs Barkas, Mrs Denniston, Miss Fairhurst, Mrs F. M. Wallace, Mr and Miss Garsia, Misses Wynn-Williams, Cowlishaw, Freda Marsden. Mr, Mrs, and Miss Reeves, Mrs Russell. Mr, Mrs, and Miss Malet, Messrs A. and J. Anderson, Mrs Elnislie. Mrs Milton, Mrs Lewin, Mrs Secretan, Misses Helmore, Miss Ross, etc.

Dolly Vale.
