OBITUARY.
MUCH sympathy is felt for the family of Mr Charles Haselden, whose death occurred at the Thames
last week. He was an old colonist, having emigrated to New Zealand in iB6O. Te Arai was his selected home, where he farmed until about twelve years ago, when advancing age made it advisable that he and Mrs Haselden should live in a more get-at-able place. The Thames was the locality selected. Mr Haselden was for years a Coroner and Justice of the Peace for the colony, also lay reader of the Anglican Church. After a month’s illness, at the close of 60 years of happy married life, Mr Haselden passed away to the great hereafter. He leaves four sons, six daughters, forty-three grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren, nearly all of whom reside in this colony. His eldest son was many years head of the Justice and Patent Departments, but recently retired on his pension. The second is a sheep farmer at Hunterville and a Justice of the Peace, the third is a barrister and solicitor practising in Wellington, the fourth is Canon Haselden (Vicar of Onehunga). The daughters are all married exceptone, who is a well-known resident of the Thames. The funeral was very largely attended by all classes of the community anxious to testify their great respect, esteem and love for an upright, honourable, Christian gentleman.
The death of School Inspector Airey is a great loss to the Northern Board of Education. He was a popular and able man, and his loss at so early an age is much deplored. The funeral took place on Wednesday at the Purewa Cemetery. The procession left Ellerslie at four o’clock, and was very largely attended, nearly all the members of the Board of Education being present, as well as a large body of teachers, many of whom provided wreaths. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. W. E. Gillam, of Christ Church, Ellerslie.
