Dear Bee, October 9. Much interest has been taken at Government House over the X rays, an exhibition of this marvellous discovery having been given there lately. Lady Glasgow and Lady Alice Boyle have had their hands photographed by this new process. I told you in my last letter that Lady Augusta and Lady Alice Boyle, attended by Captain Campbell-Preston, were the guests of Captain Russell at • Flax mere,’ Hastings, for the Hawke’s Bay race meeting. Mrs Russell is away, but Mrs Fox is fully capable of acting the pleasant part of hostess. 1 understand that Mr A. Pearce and his wife are also guests at ‘ Flaxmere.’ Mr and Mrs J. N. Williams were to have the honour of entertaining His Excellency and the Counte-s of Glasgow at their pretty residence. •Frimley.’ but. unfortunately. Mrs Williams (senior) is very ill. which necessitated a change in the arrangements. The Government’s new steamer, the * Tutanekai ’ (by the way. it is a good deal easier to write than to pronounce the name), took a cruise round the harbour on Saturday afternoon, having on board a large party of ladies and gentlemen, who expressed much pleasure and much appreciation of the various excellent qualities of the steamer. The party included the Hons Hall-Jones and Thompson. Messrs Guinness, Mills. Ward. Mrs and Miss Seddon, Mr and Mrs J. Gray. Mr, Mrs and Miss Logan, Misses Hutchison, Mrs and Miss Martin. Mrs Pirani. Miss Turkey, Mrs Brown and Mrs Kelly. Afternoon tea was provided on board, and Captain Fairchild did all in his power as he al ways does, to make the afternoon a pleasant one for his guests. Meye. Dear Bee, October 8. A very ENJOYABLE DANCE was given at Miss Malcolm's residence last Thursday night by Mr James Coates. The fine large house was seen at it* best as the decorat iors were so pretty. I must not forget to mention that this dance was given in honour of the giver’s birthday, also as a farewell to Mr J. Hanna, who will be leaving New Zealand shortly. The decoration in the ballroom was very effective. From the glass chandaliers was looped pale green ribbon, while here and there were clusters of flowers. The mantelpiece was prettily arranged with pot plants. A splendid sit-down champagne* upper was laid on many small tab es. which were laden with every kind of dainty you could think of. Mr Coates made a splendid host, and everyone was looked after well. Among the guests I noticed were Countess d’Abbans, who was wearing a handsome black satin gown trimmed with jet ; Mrs Napier Bell (Dunedin), black satin gown very much trimmed with jet: Mrs Larnach, brown brocade prettily .rimmed with rainbow chiffon; Mrs H. McKenzie, pale pink striped silk gown; Mrs Rhind, handsome red satin, the bodice trimmed with velvet to match and coffee lace; Mrs Abbo’t wore a rich gown of black satin brocaded with yellow and red flowers and green leaves, the front of the bodice was trimmed with fine lace and diamond c'asps; Mrs Gee. black satin trimmed with black accordion chiffon edged with white lace: Mrs Litchfield, pale grey brocade trimmed with pink ; Mrs A. Brandon, handsome cream brocade gown trimmed with rich lace ; Mrs J. Ross, handsome black velvet gown trimmed effectively with old lacs; Mrs W.
