Dear Bee, September 18. There was a fairly large audience at the Opera House last Saturday night, when M. Leo. R. Sulzberger. 8.A., gave an INTERESTING LECTURE on ‘French Wit and Humour.’ Sir James Hector took the chair, and Sir Maurice O’Rorke, Count Jouffroy D’Abbans, Mr W. T. L. Travers, and Mr J. Young also attended. Among the audience I noticed Lord Glasgow, who was accompanied by Lady Helen Boyle and the Ladies Augusta, Alice and Dorothy Boyle, the Hon. J. Boyle, Major Elliott, Captain Preston, and Captain Feilden. Lady Helen Boyle was wearing a black silk gown, handsome red velvet cloak trimmed with ecru lace and fur; Lady Augusta and Lady Alice wore black silk gowns and pretty white cloaks bound with white feather; Lady Dorothy wore a soft white gown, and red cloak. Others were the Countess D’Abbans. who was wearing a handsome black silk gown trimmed with lace; Mrs Kight, black silk gown, white cloak trimmed with fur; Mrs Gee, black gown, handsome black and red brocaded cloak; Miss Buckley (Christchurch), very pretty long white cloak edged with white feather; Mrs Anson, black silk gown, white cloak ; Tvliss Turnbull ; Mrs Samuell. black silk and lace gown, red cloak trimmed with grey fur; Lady Douglas, handsome black silk and velvet gown; Mrs Joseph, black silk jetted gown, white cloak trimmed with brown fur; Mrs Gore, black satin gown, red brocaded cloak bound with fur ; Miss A. Williams wore a pretty white frock ; Lady Hector, black satin gown trimmed with black and white brocade; Miss Hector, black skirt, becoming pale blue silk blouse : Miss Sladden. dark skirt, pretty cream satin blouse trimmed with lace; Miss Izard, black silk: Miss L. Mrs Tolhurst gave a large CHILDREN’S PARTY last Thursday night. There were about sixty guests present. Mrs Tolhurst was wearing a handsome black brocade gown trimmed with jet and lace; Miss Tolhurst wore white muslin with soft lace fichu; Miss Lucy Tolhurst looked nice in white silk. Among the few ‘grown-ups ’ who were helping to entertain were the Misse? Friend, Rose (two). Fitzherbert, Kirkcaldie, Hutchison, Stowe and Richardson. The younger ones I noticed were the Misses Riddiford. Fitzherbert, Williams (two), Rawson (two). Gore, Hislop, Haselden, Brandon, Higginson, Butt, Rhind, Joseph, Coleridge. Blair, Johnston, Riley, Richardson. Watson, and the Masters Riddiford. Williams. Higginson, Rawson. Bran don, Kempthorne, Rhind. Watson, Riley. Hutchison, Fitzherbert, Gillon, P. Fitzherbert, etc. One of the most ENJOYABLE DANCES of this season was given by Mrs T. C. Williams at her lovely house in Hobson-street last Tuesday night. The whole house was a scene of beauty. The large hall was used for dancing, and Mr and Mrs Williams received at the first entrance to the drawing-room. The billiard-room was beautifully decorated with fairy lights and lovely pots of flowering plants. The two mantelpieces in the drawing-room were a mass of camellias and monthly roses, while here and there were placed large pot plants and pampas grass. Al) up the staircase were arum lilies with there leaves, which looked very effective. The mantelpiece in the dancing hall was prettily arranged with yellow primroses and white May flowers. A splendid sit-down supper was laid in the dining room on several tables, which were prettily decorated with silver candlesticks and candles with yellow silk shades strewn with violets, and clear glass vases of yellow daffodils. King’s band supplied the excellent music. Mrs Williams was wearing a handsome pale grey brocade gown trimmed with clusters of grey feathers and white lace; Mrs Arthur Russell looked well in cream brocade trimmed with handsome lace; Miss Williams wore black satin with full bodice of white chiffon, with revers of black velvet embroidered with pearls; Miss H. Williams looked nice in black silk with Sale pink chiffon bodice trimmed with yellow silk lace; the Lisses Elfle and Eila Williams wore very pretty yellow and white brocade gowns trimmed with chiffon ; and the Misses Una and Githa Williams wore pretty white muslin frocks trimmed with satin ribbon and lace. Among the guests were Lord and Lady Glasgow, the latter wearing a handsome gown of dark blue satin with panels on the skirt ana re vers of white satin embroidered with beetles’ wings; she also wore her lovely diamond tiara and necklet; the Ladies Augusta and Alice Boyle wore pale blue satin with folded bodices of white chiffon; Lady Dorothy Boyle looked nice in white muslin trimmed with lace and satin

ribbons ; the Countess D’Abbans was wearing a handsome black silk gown trimmed with jet and lace : Mrs C. Johnston wore a black satin gown, the bodice trimmed with folds of white spangled chiffon and pink roses ; Mrs Wallis, pale pink brocade, the bodice trimmed with lace and pink flowers; Mrs Pynsent. mauve corded silk trimmed with violet velvet and cream lace ; Mrs Grace, handsome black watered silk, with revers of old lace edged with beaver: Mrs Higginson, handsome gown of grey brocade; Mrs Newman, olack satin, the bodice very much trimmed with jet and red flowers; Mrs G. James Boyle, Dr. Martin, Dr. Collins, etc. Mrs Alfred Brandon gave a LARGE JUVENILE DANCE last Tuesday night. The Misses Brandon and Larnach were helping to entertain the young folk, among whom were the Misses Higginson. Joseph, Riddiford, Johnston, Williams. Gore, Gibson. Fitzherbert. Rawson, Reid, Coleridge, Mackintosh, Douglas, Harding. Edwin. Haselden, Willis, McKenzie, Rhind, and Masters Riddiford, Burnett, Fitzherbert. Tolhurst. Gillon, Kempthorne. Higginson, Broad, Haselden, Rawson, Newman, Johns on and Stowe. A large number of Maoris waited on Lord Glasgow last Monday afternoon to bid him ‘ FAREWELL.’ The Otaki Band (all natives) played several nice musical selections during the afternoon, thus greatly enlivening the proceedings. Afternoon tea and the accompanying cake was laid in the dining-room. Lady Glasgow and her three daughters and sons were present, also Bishop and Mrs Wallis. Mrs and the Misses Johnston, Mr and Mrs Mantell. Sir Walter Buller and Miss Buller, Mr, Mrs. the Misses and the Messrs Williams, and several members of Parliament. Lord and Lady Glasgow and family leave to-day in the ‘ Hinemoa ’ for a few days’ cruise round Pelorus Sound. Mrs Stafford gave A VERY JOLLY EUCHRE PARTY last Monday night. She received her guests in a handsome black brocade gown trimmed with jet embroidery and lace; Miss Stafford wore a dark skirt and pretty cream silk blouse ; her younger sister wore black velvet triinmed with white lace. A few present were Mr and Mrs Shortridge, the Misses Seddon, Miss and the Messrs Reid, the Misses Rose. Miss Simpson. Mr and Mrs Barnett. Miss Ross, the Misses Griffiths, Young. Gibson, etc. Mrs Kirkcaldie gave a party of the same kind last Tuesday night, and Mrs Logan one on Saturday night. Miss Tuckey’s annual Assembly dance came to a close last week, much to the general regret. Among the guests I noticed Mesdamea McKellar, Simpson, Stafford, Misses Brandon, Davy, Edwards. Johnston. Larnach, Hargreaves, Richardson. Ross, Seddon, Messrs Branfill, Hulme, Goring. Reid, Wood, etc. Ophelia.
