THE NEW GOVERNMENT PRINTER.
MR JOHH MACKAY, the gentleman recently appointed to the position of Government Printer, though not born in the colony, has been educated and learned his business in New Zealand. With his parents he arrived in Dunedin in iB6O, before the discovery of gold in Otago. In 1865 he went to learn the printing trade in the Bruce Herald Office, Milton, at the time when the late Mr E. T. Gillon was editor of that paper. Upon completion of his six years’ apprenticeship he began business for himself in Princes street, where he was shortly afterwards joined by Mr George Fenwick, now managing director and editor of the Otago Daily Times. This business Mr Mackay successfully conducted till 18S6, when he disposed of it, aud took a well earned holiday. This period of rest, how-
ever, was spent in Britain and on the Continent, where he visited several of the largest printing offices, paper mills, and manufacturing stationery warehouses. When leaving Dunedin to enter upon his new duties, a large and representative meeting of the employees in the printing trade assembled to wish Mr Mackay success. The speakers on the occasion were very complimentary in their remarks on Mr John Mackay, and later on when he was leaving the Dunedin railway station a large number of friends were present to bid Mr Mackay ‘ goodbye,’ and as the train moved away three hearty cheers were given for the * Government printer.’
