MINING NOTES.

Ajax (Kuaotunu). —Stone from the reef cut in the mine when assayed yielded at the rate of £3 iqs 3%d per ton. The sample was taken indiscriminately from the reef, and is therefore a fair genuine test of its value. Napier (Coromandel). —From the stopes on the intermediate leader between 4 and 5 tons of crushing dirt have been obtained, which show gold frequently. Maori Dream (Kuaotunu). —No. 1 lode is a fine compact body of stone 7 feet wide, and 6 feet of this reef is payable. The new reef is 2 feet wide, and prospects worth at least lodwts per ton. Victoria (Thames). —The leader in the winze is only about 3 or 4 inches in thickness, and shows nice gold in places. A ponnd or two of very good stone was secured from the stope over the eastern intermediate level. Nonpareil (Thames). —The Queensland reef continues to show colours of gold at each breaking down, and there is a decided improvement in the Shamrock reef at the low level. When breaking down the stone showed strong dabs and colours of coarse gold freely. City of Auckland (Karangahake)—Thirteen assays were made from all parts of the reef for the very satisfactory average value of 239 >7s per ton. Grace Darling (Waitekauri). —The reef at No. 2 level is still 6ft thick, and carries gold. The reef in the Portsea section is a fine body of stone abont 6ft in thickness, which also carries a little gold. Orlando (Thames). —Gold continues to be seen in the quartz taken from the new reef. Bunker’s Hill (Coromandel). —Gold was reported to be showing in the quartz broken down this week. Russell (Waitekauri). —The Jubilee Extended reef has been found outcropping in this mine. It is a good-sized body of stone running through a first-class channel of kindly sandstone country, and all the surroundings are favourable for gold. Waitekauri Prince.—An assay made from the footwall portion of the 25 feet reef in the mine gave a‘result at the rate of £24 15s 4d per ton. Golden Point (Thames). —The reef in the north drive has thickened to three feet, and looks promising. Evening Star (Cabbage Bay).—A new reef was located on the ground this week, close to No. 2 level. It is a nice body of stone, highly mineralised, and should carry gold when opened up. Fortuna (Cabbage Bay).—When surface-prospccting a nice looking reef abont 4 feet wide was discovered. From the 4 inch leader a splendid tailing of coarse gold can be got. Waitaia (Kuaotunu). —The low level, north, is now in from the flat sheet ; the reef is improving in appearance, more solid quartz showing. A low level is to be put in 150 feet lower down the hill. Waitekauri South.—The annual meeting of the above G.M. Company was held this week. The statement of accounts showed an expenditure of 2588 17s 4d, and a cash balance of £29 is qd. Native Chief (Coromandel). —The first ordinary general meeting of this Company lapsed, owing to there not being a quorum The balance-sheet showed a balance in hand of 2'tSo 1 is 3d. Blind Bay (Great Barrier). — A large area of ground has been pegged out here and surveyed, and a considerable amount of prospecting has been done, ann some splendid looking stone obtained. Port Charles Prospecting Syndicate.—Another reef four feet wide, encased in very good sandstone country, has been found. Waitekauri No. 2 —The annual meeting of shareholders in the above Company was held this week. The report showed expenditure £396 ~s 3d, leaving a credit balance of £f>B is. Darwin (Thames).—The reef at the No. 1 level is two feet wide, and shows gold very freely. Karaka Queen (Thames).—The new reef at the intermediate level when broken down showed gold freely. Gladys (Kuaotunu).—The reef in the bottom of the winze is 2 feet 6 inches in width with a nice channel of country. Matarangi.—Shareholders met this week and empowered the directors to dispose of the mine on such terms as they might think fit. Moanataiari Return.—The crushing at the above Company’s battery for the past month yielded £376 10s from 474 tons of ore. Bullion Export.—Eleven boxes of bullion were despatched yesterday by the * Waihora ’ to Sydney, the total quantity being lo.oStoz I7dwt. Brilliant (Kuaotunu) —A nice-looking leader has been cut. which gives very fair prospects. Pacific Cliff (Whangarei).—Mr J. T. Darbyshire (representing Messrs Leedham and Crow, of London) has decided to take the option of floating this property. British (Whangarei).—lt is expected the plant will be started in two or three weeks. Mariner ( Karangahake).—The quartz formation is 7 feet wide, iS inches being a solid body of stone which gives prospects in the dish. Mata Reefs (Tapu).—Two strong bodies of stone which are showing on the Mata section, are from 3 to 4 feet thick, and should prove payable when developed Golden King.—The reef in the low is about 5 feet wide. A few colours can be got by mortar test. Comstock (Haiomo).—The lode is gradually opening out, and is now fully 4 feet wide. Buffalo (Coromandel).—After cutting 15 feet through the big reef the hangingwall was reached. Pukewhau (Coromandel).—The leader itself continues to look well, and averages all along the stope about 8 inches, while at every breaking down colours and dabs of gold have been seen in the stone.

Welcome Find (Coromandel). —The drive on the branch of No. 2 reef from the rise is being continued, and if appearance counts for anything, no great time should elapse before gold is seen at this point. At the low level stoping is proceeding on the specimen leader from the rise with highly satisfactory results, the last breaking down being responsible for 751 b of stone, gold being left in the free. Komata Queen. —Lavington’s lode is large and kindly looking, and with development will be found of great value. Pride of Tokatea (Coromandel). —From the stopes above the intermediate level a good supply of general crushing dirt of a payable character is coming to hand, the leader averaging about 2ft in thickness. North Star (Kennedy Bay).—Seven distinct reefs have been located in this claim, these averaging from 2 to 12ft in thickness, and several of them giving very fair prospects. Bay View (Kennedy Bay).—The option for floating this property has been secured by Messrs Bewick, Moreing and Co., acting on behalf of the London and New Zealand Exploration Company. Twelve men are employed in opening up the various reefs and leaders. Last week a nice reef averaging about 3ft. wide was cut, and shows gold by pounding. Look Out.—A reef has been cut in the Look Out mine. It is about 4ft. wide.
