NELSON.
Dear Bee August 12. Last Wednesday evening a very ENJOYABLE ASSEMBLY was held in the Provincial Hall. There were a fair number present, and all seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. The hall was most tastefully decorated with numbers of bright coloured flags and fans, the effect being most gay. The western end of the room was furnished with chairs, lounges, etc., and was much used by the dancera The supper table was most artistically arranged, cream roses being the chief flowers. All sorts of delicious trifles, jellies, ete., were provided. Mrs Burns was much admired in a beautiful azure blue silk, the bodice being trimmed with passementerie; Mrs Percy Adams looked well in pink corded silk with touch of light green velvet on bodice ; Mesdames Glasgow, Leggatt, Preshaw, Mackay, Perrin, and Mscquarrie all wore black; Mrs Roberts, black velvet handsomely trimmed with jet; Mrs Bunny, pink ; Miss Leggatt, white crepon and silk, with bows of blue and red ribbon ; Miss Wood looked well in yellow silk crepon bodice of yellow brocade ; Mies Ingles (Hawke's Bay) was much admired in rich black brocade trimmed with jet; Miss Mackay, deep pink crepon, bodice finished with green sequin trimming ; Miss Gribben, heliotrope crepon with scarlet flowers; the Misses Fell (two) were attired alike in pretty gowns of cream veiling with gold trimmings ; Miss Perrin, pretty white crepon (her debutante gown) : Miss Huddlestone, black, with apple green on low brdice ; Miss Glasgow, white silk ; Miss Moore ; Miss Preshaw, white ; Miss) Tomlinson, black ; Miss Gannaway, blue ; Miss Heaps, sea green crepon ; Miss Campbell. The young people have been unusually gay lately ; almost every week has brought an entertainment of some kind for them. I often wonder bow lessons and dances go together! There were several very pretty frocks worn on Saturday. Miss Madge Mackay, who made a capital little hostess, looked nice in pink ; the Misses M. Trolove, Broad, Mabel G'asgow, and Christophers also wore pink; the little Misses Roy (New Plymouth) looked very nice in blue ; Miss Ethel Sealy, eream frock beautifully

On Saturday afternoon the whole of the battalion paraded, and detachments were told off for outpost work round about Bishopdale and M runt- street, after which Colonel Fox, who had carefully watched the proceedings, reviewed the work, and seemed on the whole much pleased with the different corps.
