AUCKLAND.

Dear Bee, August 24. Mrs A. B. Reynolds, of Ponsonby, gave a CHARMING AFTERNOON TEA on Wednesday last. During the afternoon musical items were contributed by Mrs (Dr.) Knight, Mrs Reynolds. Miss Jenyns, and Miss Campbell, Among those present were Mesdames Knight. Douglas. Watt. Hart. Petrie. Hughes. Kelly. Parkinson. Martin, Gulliver, Jenyns, Oldham, Misses Oldham, Kelly, Campbell, and Jenyns. Mrs Whewell, Re mu era, gave a LARGE AFTERNOON TEA on Friday for her daughter. Mrs Jim Taylor, of Cambridge, who is on a visit to her mother. The tea-table was beautifully de corated with anemones. Miss Whewell poured out tea for the many guests in the dining-room, assisted by Miss Jackson and Miss Buddle, while Mrs Whewell and Mrs Taylor received the guests, who were coming and going all the afternoon, in the drawing-room. Mrs Laurie sang several songs very sweetly, and Miss Whewell played some pieces. Amongst the guests were Mesdames Conolly. Dargaville, Jackson. Heywood. Pritt. Beatty, Cotter. Morrin, S. Morrln, Thompson, Laurie, Buddle, Ruddock, Carpenter, Hardie, Lennox, McMillan. Tilly, Saunderson, Johnstone, Bews, Pay ton, Gray, Nolan, E. Hesketh, Otway, Wynyard, etc.** Mrs B. Baker gave a very enjoyable impromptu PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE PARTY on Saturday evening. Seven tables were kept going till 11 o’clock. Mrs J. R. Hanna won the ladies’ first prize (a case with three bottles of scent) and Miss Henton the ladies' booby (a bottle of scent*. Mr Schatz won the gentlemen’s first prize (a pocket book), and Mr O’Meara the booby (a toy that caused great fun*. The hostess wore a pretty brown costume with silk bodice: Mrs J. R. Hanna, slate grey and terracotta silk; Miss Hen ton. black, sea-green blouse; Miss G. Henton. brown, pale pink blouse; Miss Knight, cardinal; Miss Butters, dark skirt, red si)k blouse; Miss K. Butters, dark skirt, green blouse; Miss O’Meara, cardinal velvet; Misses Leighton, Hanison, Campbell (two), and Lena Owen. Among the gentlemen present were Messrs Schatz. Baker (two). Leighton, Peacock, Hanna, Laurie, Batty, Hewitt, Butters. O’Meara, Harrison, Maddox, McCabe, etc., etc. Mrs Motion, of Western Springs, Morningside, gave an AFTERNOON TEA last Tuesday to meet Mrs Baker. We were sorry vhat Mrs Baker was unable to be present, as she was prostrated with a severe headache. Afternoon tea accompanied with tasty cakes were handed round by the young lady visitors with charming alacrity. Amongst those present I noticed Mesdames Webster, Martin, Kerr-Taylor and daughters. Barker. Wilks, Sellers, Misses Chambers Taylor, Cecil Taylor, Larkins Mrs and Miss Dixon, the Rev. F. Larkins, Mr Ivan Motion, etc. During the latter part of the afternoon our hostess, by request of the young people, set her large musical box to play, which was much appreciated. THE PONSONBY ‘AT HOME.’ The Ponsonby ‘At Home’ committee must be congratulated on the success which attends their indefatigable efforts to make these monthly dances enjoyable. On Friday evening last the fourth of the season took place. There were about forty couples present, and with Adams* excellent string band and the floor in perfect order, everybody was sorry when the last waltz came to an end. The supper, which was under the supervision of the ladies* committee, was, as usual, well appointed and laid with great taste, the decorations consis ing of spring flowers and coloured crinkly saper. Mrs Devore was in pink silk veiled with black lace; Mrs J. .Holland, handsome black silk trimmed wi<h jet. full plastron of sequined net; Mrs J. R. Hanna, effective yellow silk under black figured net. black velvet sleeves and long ends extending to end of skirt; Mrs Dufaur, cream crepon skirt, gold shot crepe silk bodice with ruffle basque and butterfly sleeves: Mrs Williams, electric {blue crepon accordion-pleated skirt and sleeves strapped with pierced bands and showing silk same colour; Mrs Littler, yellow crepon, silk bodice with white chiffon fichu; Mrs Oxley, grey, white satin sleeves; Mrs Osmond, black crepon; Mrs Crawshaw. pale yellow crepen, square corsage edged with black jet; Mrs E. Buchanan, cream crepon, black chiffon pleated vandykes from low bodice; Mrs E. Burton wore a lovely yellow sarin gown with cream sequined lace: Mrs Ralph, pink silk veiled with black net; Mrs B. Baker, cream crepon, salmon satin bodice fringed with pearls: Miss Devore looked charming in black velvet with touches of crimson on bodice; Miss Brett, in ivory Liberty silk, low corsage finished with lace and a cluster of yellow narcissi, was much admired; Miss Essie Holland, effective coral pink crepon frock trimmed with white lace ; Miss Wyldblood, black satin with an overskirt of velvet spotted net; Miss Masefield, turquoise blue crepon ; Miss K. Masefield, Nil green veiling with satin sleeves and a bertha of snowdrops; Miss Vaile, cream, blue silk sash: Miss Laird, pale green crepon, black net sleeves; Miss Caldwell looked pretty in yellow with fan sleeves of a deeper shade of silk : Miss Atkinson, pink floral silk, bouffant sleeves with frills of lisse ; Miss Lena Owen, azure blue silk, white chiffon fichu ; Miss Kennedy, white and green ; Miss Francis George looked pretty in French white crepon : Miss V. Dacre, cream cashmere trimmed with silver passementerie: Miss Morrin. white with clusters of crimson flowers on corsage and on her hair; Miss Langsford looked extremely well in black, apple-green silk bodice veiled with black lace and jet fringe falling from sq uare cut neck ; Miss Lelia Langsford, white; Mies Lena Butters, heliotrope Indian muslin, corsage trimmed with violet velvet; Miss B. Gittos looked dainty in white: Miss Braithwaite, black velvet and pink chiffon ; Miss Eva Hughes, white with posies of pink flowers on her shoulders, and a pnt y bouquet; Miss Walmesley, sea-green embossed crepon; Miss Williams, white, full sleeves composed of white satin ; Miss Choyce, white crepon, bcdice veiled with white chiffon, wreath of white heath round her neck; Miss Preece, pink; Miss Watson, cream with yellow satin sleeves; Miss Osmond, pale yellow; Miss Walnutt, white; Miss Cussen. pretty cream silk; Miss Jamieson, white crepon; etc., etc. Amongst the gentlemen were Messrs Holland, Burton, Hanna. Ou Thursday evening last Miss Cbrystal, of the Girls’ College, Ponsonby Road gave a BREAKING UP DANCE in the Ponsonby Hall to her pupils and friends. AN /VTitRNOON TEA was given by Miss Hewin at ‘ Mountnessing ’ on Monday afternoon in honour of Miss Bell, of Christchurch, who is leaving Auckland after a pleasant visit. The table was tastefully decorated with primrose art muslin and flowers, and pretty baskets filled with cakes and sweets. Music was contributed by Mrs Isemonger, Misses Holland. Bell, and Wright. The hostess wore a grey skirt, pretty grey and black blouse; Mrs Isemonger, brown frock, lace collar; Mrs W. Shera, pretty tweed costume; Mrs Woodroffe. grey and black velvet frock: Miss Savage, navy serge, white vest, and charming black and white hat; Miss E. Holland, chic navy serge ; Misses Bell, electric blue and heliotrope frocks respectively; Miss Bell (Christchurch), black relieved with whita vest covered with fancy net; Miss Fraser, fawn trimmed with electric; Misses Goldie, one in navy serge, one in electric blue; Miss Graham, black costume; Miss Wright, electric blue, jet trimming; Misses Kyrie, one in navy serge, the other, peacock blue ; etc., etc. Phyllis Broune.
