THE Countess of Glasgow gives an * At Home ’ this week.

Mrs Craddock Beauchamp (Anikiwa, Pictoa) has gone to Wellington to meet her nephew, Mr Broughton, expected by the * Rimutaka,’ who intends spending a vear in New Zealand previous to settling down to a profession in England.

The captaincy of the Avondale Rifle Corps, Auckland, vacant for some time past, has been filled by the election of Captain Robertson, who was lately in charge of the City Rifles Company.

News has been received that Mr A. K. Howard, who left Waipawa some months ago, has died at Coolgardie of fever.

Mr Hvam Brasch, late of New Plymonth. has passed his final examination for the law at the Melbourne University.

Mr J. C. Hanna, Inspector of the New Zealand Insurance Company, arrived in Auckland last week from Wellington.

Mrs T. Inch, of Moturoa (Taranaki), when driving home on Sunday afternoon (Augnst 9th), was thrown from her trap, owing to the horse stumbling. She was severely hurt about the head.

Mr and Mrs J. M. Meredith, of Masterton, are in Christchurch for race week, as are Mr and Mrs Weson, Corwar, Mrs John Studholme and her daughter.

Miss Levien (Melbourne) is at present staying with Mrs Percy Adams. Nelson, who gave a small dinner party in honour of her gnest on Tuesday evening.

Captain Fielden has gone down South for the race meeting.

There were no less than twenty-eight applications for the position of master at a small country school in Taranaki.

The Misses Richmond and Baber who have recently made Wellington their home, have taken over Mrs Swainson’s private school in that city. If tumour is correct their many friends here will wish them every success in their new venture.

Mr Joy’s hairdresser’s shop in New Plymouth was broken into on Sunday night (August 9th) by two youths, who, however, were caught on the premises.

Miss Harband, of Lyttelton left by the ‘ Wakatipu’ en route for China, having essayed to take up the perilous work of trying to christianize the celestials.

Miss Tabart (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs Rhind Wellington.

Lady Whitmore and Mrs Dixon have returned to Napier.

Mr N. A. Nathan, of Auckland, is said to be progressing favourably from his recent accident, in which he was thrown from his horse.

Mr B. Wallace, Professor of Agriculture at Edinburgh University, is at present visiting Victoria for the benefit of his health.

The Rev. Leonard Isitt is holding a temperance mission in Nelson, giving addresses each evening at the Theatre.

The Earl and Countess of Hopetoun suffered a sad bereavement on Sunday, June 21st, in the death of their infant daughter. Their other two children are Lord Hope and the Hon Charles Melbourne Hope, the latter a native of Melbourne.

Messrs Pilling Bros., late proprietors of the Tuapcka Times, were entertained (on the occasion of the last publication of the paper) at Lawrence by Mr and Mrs Dimant. During the supper the staff presented Messrs Pilling with silver plate as a memento of their long service under the recipients. Mr Dunne (the editor), in making the presentation, referred to the cordial relations that had always existed between the staff and Messrs Pilling.
