HAMILTON.

Dear Bee, July 10. We had eight tables on Friday evening at the third of the series of PROGRESSIVE EUCHRE PARTIES. Amongst the visitors were Mrs H. Biggs. Miss Alice WyldeBrowne (Auckland), and Miss Goodwin. The hostesses this time were Mrs (Dr.) Kenny and Mrs Stevens. They made the schoolroom as cosy as could be with a curtain across the centre of the room, and warm rugs covering the seats, which form the square inside which the tables are placed. Notwithstanding all this there were many complaints of the cold weather. Still, it didn’t prevent play being kept up with spirit till half-past ten o’clock, when the reckoning up came, and found Mrs Hume and Mrs L. Cussen ties for the first prize. In playing off the former was victorious, winning a handsome purse. It was also a tie for the gentlmen’s prize between Mr W. Hume and Miss Ethel Hay (who was obliged to play as a gentleman, owing to the scarcity of the male sex), and finally Mr W. Hume won a pretty pair of silVer sleeve links. The ladies’ booby prize fell to Mrs H. Biggs, who did not object, as it happened to be a pretty scent bottle. Mr F. Stevens won the gentlemen’s booby. After half an hour’s chatting over the refreshments, all dispersed hoping to meet again in a fortnight. The whist party on Monday evening took place at Mr R. F. Sandes’. Eight members were present, and the time passed pleasantly.
