WAIHI MINES.

SILVERTON AND GLADSTONE. Our illustration this week gives an admirable idea of two properties at Waihi now owned and worked by English Companies. We refer to the Waihi-Silverton and the Waihi-Gladstone, which adjoin each other. The hill on the left hand side, and buildings on the flat belong to the Waihi-Silverton Company, which holds an area of 200 acres. The site of the shaft is shown by the poppet heads Adjoining them is the engine-house, while nearer the front is situated the office of the Company. Near where the teams are shown may be seen the stacks of timber all ready for use, and beyond are the change-house, smithy, and kilns. This view gives a capital idea of the systematic and substantial way in which English Companies go to work when they have taken over a mining property. Already the Waihi-Silverton mine is giving payable returns, and when the amount of low grade surface ore in hand has been treated the yields should be still larger, as better grade ore is now being won from the stopes on the reef deeper down. The Waihi-Gladstone mine is situated at the right hand of the picture, and includes the hill in which the month of the drive is shown. An amount of work has already been done on this property by the syndicate which recently sold part of its interest to English capitalists, who are now about to commence operations on an extensive scale, ample working capital having been provided by the Company recently floated in London. The Waihi-Gladstone has one level over 700 feet in which four large reefs have been cut, all of which are encased in good country. The trench or cutting on the top of the hill shows where the last work was done. In this cutting a good sized reef has been opened out, stone from which averages from /4 to /To per ton. Lower down may be seen the entrance to the drive that was put in to test the reef deeper down. A low level has now been commenced near the bottom of the gully, so that the mine may be worked systematically. Now that ample working capital is available for the erection of suitable crushing plant, and the development of the property, this mine should in due course take its place amongst the bullion-producers of the Waihi district. On the opposite page appears another view also from the Waihi district. Near the front on the left hand side may be seen the top of the poppet heads and battery buildings belonging to the Waihi-Silverton Company. The hill immediately behind the buildings is the Waihi-Gladstone property already referred to above. The conical hill on the right hand side is the property of the Waihi Union Company, which is practically an offshoot from the original Waihi Company. Formerly this was part of that Company’s property, but a vear ago the Union section of 250 acres was cut off and floated separately in a company with a capital of £200,000. The English Company is now pushing forward development works vigorously. On the side of the hill may be seen the mouths of two of the drives, and at the foot are the offices of the Company and some of the workmen’s cottages. A scheme is now afoot for the erection of a still larger crushing plant for the Waihi some miles away at Owharoa, and when this is completed it is understood that the Waihi Union Company will take over the present Waihi battery. In the distance is shown the Black Hill, on which is situated a number of other mines, which are now being systematically prospected by local companies. COROMANDEL PENINSULA. The Chamber of Mines has just issued the second edition of the complete map of the Coromandel Peninsula. This one has been added so as to show all the claims granted up to date.
