HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR, accompanied by Major Elliot and party, have accepted the invitation of Mr Every McLean. Howick, near Auckland, for pheasant shooting on May ist. Mr James Logan, of the firm of Macky, Logan, Steen, and Co., leaves Auckland on the 12th pros, for England, where he will probably remain some years. Mrs Logan, her mother (Mrs Brown), and her little girl are also going. The family will be much missed, and their departure will be greatly felt both at the North Shore and in Auckland, where Mr and Mrs Logan are deservedly popular.

Dr. and Mrs Hay left Auckland for Sydney per s.s ' Alameda.'

The Rev. O. R. Hewlett, who has been assisting the Rev. E. Mulgan since his return from England, leaves St. Peter's Church, Onehunga, in order to live in Papaknra. Mr L. D. Nathan will take a trip to England. He leaves Auckland in about a fortnight. The Misses McKelvie, of Wanganui, formerly of Wellington, left Mentone at the end of March to visit the Italian Lakes. They will remain there till June, when they will cross to England and Scotland, returning to New Zealand next November. Mr Henry Winkleman, at present with Mr Kissling (Secretary to the Auckland Chamber of Mines), has received an appointment in the Bank «f New Zealand. Wellington. Mr and Mrs Brassey have left Auckland for a short trip to England. The Misses Churton are going to Gisborne. Miss Bull is going to stay in Sydney for some months. Mr James Russell leaves for England via 'Frisco next month. Mr F. Hewix, formerly of Auckland, but now of Melbourne, with Mrs Hewin, returns to Australia on Monday, after a short visit to friends in Auckland. Mrs Chas. Buddle, who is paying a short visit to her Auckland friends, has left for Wellington. Mr Murray, manager of the South British Insurance Company at Calcutta, with Mrs Murray, sailed for San Francisco en route for England, on leave, by ‘ Monowai.'

Many people will regret to hear that Mr Lockie, of Wellington, is dangerously ill. Owing to telegrams received reporting his condition to be very precarious, his daughter (Mrs J. Kirker, left on Saturday for Wellington.

Mr and Mrs J. Gray left Auckland for Wellington last week after a short stay at Howick.

Mrs Mules, of Nelson, has gone to the West Coast, where she is doing good work amongst the sufferers by the late Bmnnerton disaster.

Mrs Richmond has returned to Nelson. She is at present the guest of Mrs Sclanders, her daughter.

Mrs Edmund Bunny, of Wellington, is spending a few weeks in Nelson.

Miss Mary Seddon, who has been the guest of the Mayor and Mrs Trask, has returned to Wellington.

Mrs R. W. HANSARD(Napier)has gone to Christchurch with her two little children.

Miss Nellie Heath has returned to Napier from Gisborne, where she has been the guest of Mr and Mrs W. L. Rees.

Mr Peter Gow, of Waipukurau, has gone to Sydney and Melbourne.

Miss Lilian Edgar, M.A., has been appointed general secretary of the New Zealand branch of the Theosophical Society. The appointment was made by the Society’s president, Colonel Olcott. Miss Edgar re-

turned from Australia to take up her new duties last week.

Miss Fowler, another Australian visitor to Welling ton, has returned to her Sydney home.

The death of Mr E. Watkins, French master at the Auckland College and Grammar School, is a great loss to that institution. Mr Watkins was a son of Lieu-tenant-Colonel Watkins, of the Hon. East India Company’s service, and brother of Mr Kenneth Watkins, the well-known artist. A memorial service was held in St. Paul’s Church on Monday afternoon, and the body was interred in St. Mark’s Cemetery, Remuera. Besides the relatives of the deceased gentleman there was a full attendance of the Grammar School boys. The funeral service was read by the Rev. Canon Nelson and the Rev. J. K. Davis. The Countess of Granville and her daughter are going to Australia, and may visit New Zealand. Commander H. C. Kingsford, of H.M.V.S. ‘ Nel. son,’ is visiting this colony. The widow of Mr James Speight, an old Dunedin resident, died rather suddenly last week. Much regret is expressed at the death of the Rev. L. H. Outram, 8.A., who was for some time at St. Matthew’s Church, Auckland. He died at the London University College Hospital, aged 33. Mr P. L. Dignan, Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, has returned to Auckland. He and his familyhave been staying in Tauranga. Miss NewalL, from Australia, is staying with her aunt, Mrs Parfitt, in Wellington.

Mr H. Fraser, of Messrs T. and S. Morrin, received a handsome gold albert and pendant on his severing his connection with that firm, and starting in business on his own account.

Mr J. H. Witheford had quite a little adventure in London the other day. It appears that when he was being driven to Blackheath his horses took fright and bolted. One of the animals fell, and Mr Witheford promptly got out and sat on its head, but while so doing he saw one of the crowd which had gathered round about him quietly enter the vehicle. The Aucklander, mindful, no doubt, that London is not New Zealand, jumped up and dragged the intruder out, but the latter's friend began to hustle our friend, nay, to show signs of a desire to go through his pockets, and would most probably have done so had not the policeman come to his rescue. The horse being set on his legs, Mr Witheford resumed his journey in safety.

Miss H. C. Davenport, being unable to return from London to Napier by the P. and O. ' Victoria,’ is coming by the ‘ Tainui.’

MR W. S. Hampson, of Porter and Hampson, of Auckland, is in London, with mines in his pocket.

Mr and Mrs Maxwell have returned to Wellington from a short visit to Timaru.

Miss Coleridge, who has been spending the summer in Dunedin, returned to Wellington last week.

Mrs, Miss, and Mr Molesworth Tolhurst, Wellington, are back again after their trip to Riverton, whither they went to be present at the wedding of Mr Gerald Tolhurst to Miss Neave.

The Premier and Mrs Seddon are once more comfortably settled in their residence in Molesworth street. Wellington. Mr Guy Johnston is staying with his parents, Mr and Mrs C. J. Johnston, Wellington having come down on account of ill-health. Miss Knight passed through the Empire City last week on her way home to Sydney. Miss Hilda Johnston (Wellington) has returned to Waituna. Mr and Mrs ORorke (Auckland, and Mr and Mrs Basil Lane (Halcombe) were in Wellington for a fewdays. It is said that Mr John Meeson has let his pretty home. Feudalton, Christchurch, for a term of several years, and he with Mrs and Miss R. Meeson will winter in Sydney or Melbourne on the homeward route. England being talked of eventually. Dr. and Mrs Clayton (Rangiora) and family have taken up their residence in ' Avon House ’ (Christchurch), so long occupied by Dr. Jennings, and intend settling there.

Mr J. H. Baker, of Wellington, is tonring the Hot Lakes district.

Nelson people are delighted to see Mr E L. Broa< again, but his visit is only to be a short one.

Mrs C. B. Morrison has returned to Wellington after spending the summer months at their country home near Waikanae.

Miss Barron (Wellington) is staying with Mrs H Elder, Waikanae.

Dr. and Mrs Cleghorn are in Nelson from Bien heim for a few days, also Mr G. Watts.

Miss McLaren (Christchurch; is staying with Mrs Henry McKenzie in F'itzherbert Terrace. Wellington, for some months.

The s.s. ‘ Oroya,’ which leaves Melbourne early next month, will take a Christchurch contingent in the Misses Nora Baldwin, Moorhouse, and ljueenie Beswick. The latter lady having successfully passed nearly every available nursing standard in New Zealand, goes to London to continue her professional career. Miss Coleridge has returned to Wellington from Dunedin. Miss Higgins has given up her position at the Nelson Girls’ College and gone to Christchurch. All are sorry to have to bid her ‘ good-bye.’ Before leaving the College she received handsome presents from both pupils and teachers. Her place is to be taken by Mrs Bain. Mrs and the Misses Williams (Wellington went up to Hawke's Bay to be present at Miss Lucy Williams’ wedding, which took place on the 22nd.

MR and Mrs Nicholls (Sumnerl go to ’ White Rock ’ with their children for the coming holidays, and Mr and Mrs Hayhurst to their home, ‘ Arewenoa,’ for the same vacation.

Mr and Mrs Pearson and Mr and Mrs Biss are among the many Wellingtonians who contemplate a visit to Sydney shortly.

Miss Wardell is a guest of Mrs Barry Goring, Hob son-street, Wellington.

Mrs Graham (Dunedin) is staying with Mrs Harding, of the Empire City.

Mrs Lee is paying a visit to Mrs Collins in Welling ton.

The Misses Harding have returned to the Empire City from a visit to country friends.

Mrs Roberts and Mrs Buchanan are leaving Turret House, Christchurch (where they have been staying-, for a trip over the water to see Miss Dezie Roberts, whose rheumatic illness renders it inadvisable for her to return to the City of the Plains just yet.

Mr and Mrs Cecil Keble are in Wellington for the present.

Mr J. Wither has returned to Nelson from Eng land, where he has been spending the last few mouths.

Mr and Mrs Parfitt leave Wellington for Sydney on the 6th May. They will be much missed here by a large circle of friends.

Mrs Lyon, ‘ Chilcombe,’ Christchurch, will winter in Sydney for her health, and another loss will be Mrs Heaton Rhodes, who goes to Melbourne on a visit.

Mrs F. H. Wilson Culverden, Christchurch, and her son are thither bound, and Mr and Mrs Lane Park Terrace., leave very shortly now

Mrs Forbes («« Miss Rookes has returned to Paeroa after a brief stay in Auckland.

The s.s. ‘ Ruapehu ' took several people for the Old Country. Mr Joe Gould, Christchurch, Rev. J. C. Andrewsand Mrs Andrews Nelson ,Mr and Mrs Alister Clarke (Christchurch , Dr. and Mrs Thomas (Timaru and Mr and Mrs George Kettlewell (Christchurch 1 are amongst those who will be generally and socially missed during their absence. Miss K. Howard (Picton) has gone to Wellington .'or a couple of months. Mr and Mrs Duncan Cameron, Mrs Fulton, and Mr Dampier Crossley have all been in Christchurch this week. Mr W. D. Holgate left Auckland for Sydney by the ’ Alameda? Mr Polson has resigned the assistant mastership at the Timaru High School in -order to go to Napier He will be on the staff of the High School in that town.
